Confirmed this week;

Kurt Bush will give up his top 35 status and turn the points over to Hornish, NASCAR has concurred. Is this some sad crap or what? If you can't race your way in, you don't belong there. Nascar has driven but another wedge between me and them. (realizing they don't need me anyway) Duane

It will be interesting to see how things go after the first 5 races.

NASCAR permits Penske to swap owners points between Busch, Hornish: NASCAR has approved Penske Racing's request to transfer the owner points from #2-Kurt Busch to #77-Sam Hornish Jr., a move that locks the three-time IndyCar Series champion into the first five races of next season. Hornish publicly thanked Busch for giving him the points at the Penske holiday party on Friday night. Bud Denker, senior vice president of Penske Corp., confirmed Saturday that the team would swap the points with NASCAR's approval. Robin Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president of competition, said the sanctioning body had signed off on the transfer. "This would obviously help Sam as he prepares to run the first five races instead of prepares to qualify for the first five races," Denker said. "With a champion like Kurt Busch and the opportunity to utilize (the points), anyone would be foolish to not take care of the situation." Hornish, a former Indianapolis 500 winner, is leaving that series for NASCAR next season. But his #77 Dodge won't be one of the 35 cars locked into the first five races of the year. As the 2004 series champion, Busch has a provisional position that he could fall back on should he fail to qualify on speed.(ESPN.com/AP)(12-15-2007)

just when i thought nascar couldn't get any worse.......

next??? franchises. 11 owners. 4 cars each. newcomers need not apply.

maybe this is the first step towards a new series developing. one for race fans, instead of People magazine readers. with the mega-teams taking over cup and busch...

time for a revolution! the lower and middle classes are being pushed too far!

stepping off the soapbox now...

attend your local short track. especially if it's dirt.

See, I would franchise 11 owners, 2 cars each. Then let the fastest of the rest in. Not franchised, not one of the 21 fastest then see you next week. And, no provisionals. This seems to be the fairest method. Tho some owners may have a hard time deciding who to franchise, right HMS...

ARCA.

No franchise!

No nothin', fast 43 period. If I didn't have a DVR, I doubt that I would waste my time watching the race. They continually try (and succeed) to pizz me off. I'm a old time race fan, I got a Blue Duece in my back window of my pick-up, but there makin' it hard on me!! Duane

This is no different than a few years ago when a start up team brought in Terry Labonte to drive for them, simply because he was a past champ and would pretty much have a guarenteed starting sport. After the team made the top 35, a driver switch was made. The following year, NASCAR made the change that champs could only get 5 (I bellieve) past champ provisionals. This ticked Dale Jarrett off and of course, we all know that he missed many races last year that he wouldn't have had the rule not been changed. The teams are all playing the game by the rules.

what has sam hornish accomplished in nascar to earn a free pass for the first five races of the season?

2 cup starts. best finish: 30th avg fin: 33.5
11 busch starts. best finish: 15th avg fin: 32.8

this is just more catering to the mega-owners.

I completely understand this from a business stand point and I would expect an owner to try to do this, he has alot invested in the driver and sponsor BUT for NASCAR to allow it just drives me nuts. I don't know why I let it bother me, but I do... Duane:eek2:

Don't hate the player (Penske, Hornish or Kurt), hate the game (Nascar). This is all their making. Penske is just playing within the rules as they set it down.

Well, if he keeps that streek alive during his first 5 races, it probably won't matter because he won't guarunteed any more races after that anyway.

wouldnt it be tooo sweet if Bush had to use a prov at Daytona.... then rain washes out the next 4 qualifying events??? lol

I wouldn't have a problem with it if they required Bush to drive the #77 and Hornish to drive the #2.

I'm not at all worried about Bush qualifing, and if it rains, champion provisionals will cover that, I don't like the rule but if ya got it use it. Duane

now we all sit and see if nascar goes and changes the qual rules on em to tick em off.
