I was excited when my brother-in law got married in October. I am about twenty years older than him and have been in his family since he was just a kid. He has always sort of looked up to me as a big-brother type.
Now he and his new bride live across the state from us.I didnt attend the wedding because of health reasons and therefore didnt meet his wife until they came for a weekend visit a couple of weeks ago. Described as a 'huge nascar fan'---and since My wife hates the sport with a passion--I was pretty hyped about meeting her! Finally someone to talk racing with!
Well,the weekend came and I met her at last.A nice enough girl,the family all seemed really pleased with her.
Finally after dinner we all set down to talk in the living room.Now I have to explain:my brother in law is a big car nut for sure---but has never watched a single nascar race.
The conversation,when in drifted out of the boring family oriented stuff,was finally[by me of course!] steered towards the upcoming racing season.Yes! I am no writer,but the talk was very,very eye openinig and went something like this:
"Well,Brandi, are you excited about the season coming up?"I ask ready to get the ol' ball rolling.
"Oh,yeah!Can't wait for the shootout...should be,like real good!"
"Like,yes it should be!"I said trying to sound young/hip/cool.
"Hope nascar doesnt try to mandate a standard engine platform---that would be a mistake,for sure".Well,I was impressed so far----I never dreamed she would know anything about Nascars politics!
"For sure it would be".I replied happily,though my wife gave me a 'stop-sounding-stupid look'.
"Anyway,have you got any opinion on a standard body template"?She ask me.
Well,I have an opinion on EVERYTHING---as my wife smart-assedly pointed out.
"Brandi,who are your favorite drivers"? My wife ask this,so I was instantly suspicious....
"Oh for sure"! Brandi said quickly--like this was the real heart of the matter.
I jumped back in the conversation full -throttle before my wife could interfere again....
"I think a standard body template would help the underfunded teams quite a bit,and..."I started.
"I like Johnson"Brandi said.
"A pretty decent racer"I could allow that much,kind of relieved.Johnson is a Chevy guy----but it could have been worse.
"And I LOVE Jr!"Brandi gushed this out,now.
But I stayed pretty cool,determined to side step this personality quirk in my new sister-in-law.
"Uh--yeah,he's good on the plate races".I was smooth.
"Oh,Jimmie and Junebug[gag] will both be good EVERYWHERE this year!"
"Everywhere,huh?Well,I dont know about EVERYWHERE..."I started.
"Oh,like,very yes!They should rock the stands,for sure....specially with 'yummy-Jeff' helping Jimmie!And Junebug[gag] doesnt need any help,of course".
Oh of course.
"Rock the stands".I was still calm."Well,like,maybe----but I look for Stewart and Busch to run good this year".
"Tony the tiger might---but 'big-ears?No way."
My wife gave me a mean look as I tensed and explained to the young lady that I liked the 'more off beat drivers'[thanks honey] like Kurt.
"Oh why do you like Bush"?I could just hear her spelling it wrong by now.
"Well,I like a lot of the other guys too.I am looking forward to Biffle coming along this year".The doctor had said stay calm.
"HAHA! Biffle! He has a really weak chin"!Brandi sort of took on a different light now.
"Well,THAT is a very critical consideration for a race car driver"! Composure was headed south.Fast.
"I also sort of like Harvick"the she-wolf said.
"Of course,he needs some dental work".
Oh of course.
"Uh-ok"I was a little off guard.Not much mind you."Well,I dont really think ol' happy harvey is fit to drag Biffles helmet around,myself"! I had to say it.
"Like,your kidding,right"?she looked really amazed.
"Wrong"I answered."Biffle is going to be the best driver to hit the circuit since Stewart came on---or maybe even since Davey"!
She looked blank."Davey??"
"Uh-Allison"?I answered...beginning to think to hell with composure.
"OH!yeah,like arent they from around here or somethin'"?
"A few miles away---I knew Cliff pretty well".I tried to steer us into safer water.
"Never heard of Cliff,but like anyway----dont you think Jimmie or Junebug[gag] will take the title this year"?
"The devil will have a frostbit *** before JR.wins a title!"I received several sharp looks now.
"Dude[I hate to be called 'dude']they are due"!She almost gasped at my obvious failure to realize this.
Oh of course.
"They are why Ford will never win the title!They have the looks and the money!"Now her compusure slipped a notch.
"I see.And does talent play into this anywhere,or is it JUST 'looks and money'?"I countered.
"Oh,like they got talent,Chevy has.Very yes".
B****!
"Well---they have Tony now.Gordon's day is fading,but Bobby might recover and help them out...they better hope so because Childress is finished".I tried one last time to be civil,questioning my brother in laws taste in women by this point.
"Dont know who Childress is,but you will see at seasons end"!
"Ok...how long have you been a fan,then"?The doc said stay calm.
"4 years now"!She proudly exclaimed!
"Oh...For a minute I thought you were a NEW fan!Sorry."
She missed the sarcasm---And I figure she will never be on tv claiming she cloned anything.
"The whole reason that Chevy does good is because they have the coolest drivers"!
I should have thought of that.Of course.
"Your favorite drivers are pretty ugly,really".She smugly remarked.
And then it hit me:Maybe she is right.Maybe Greg's chin IS too weak for Nascar and the chick-factor.....
"Well,maybe Tom Cruise is available and Jack can fire Mark and hire him"!Ha.I had her now!
And the below words are truly her response and my whole reason for this long-winded post:
"No way!That is sooo silly for you to say,Tom wouldnt do"!
"But if I were Jack ROUSE[?] I would try to hire Brad Pitt and teach him to drive"!
"That way those Fords you like could win a title!"
Oh of course!What a sad day in motorsports.
And sorry this was so long----just bored waiting for the season to start.
