NASCAR confiscated the windshields from Michael Waltrip Racing's #00 and #56 Toyotas and from the #47 Toyota for JTG-Daugherty Racing on Friday at Talladega Superspeedway. Each team was forced to switch out the windshield for a new one after they were found to have unapproved modifications. Any penalties for the infraction will come next week. The #00 and #56 cars went out and paced the final practice session

Did the windshields have an unapproved lubricant on them? ;)

Maybe this should be the first Talladega Bonehead...

I heard there would be penalties on Tuesday. This must have been something real stupid.

Interested to see what the infraction was. I can only think of three reasons the windshields would be illegal... Either an aero advantage of some sort, possibly being too thin, or having something like an anti-glare coating.

I'm thinking too thin. Would become a safety hazard in an accident. Any kind of lubricant would actually cause more friction than the material itself, and would be far too obvious

To say nothing of making it hard to see.

It was actually the police who confiscated them. In an effort to save money to pay Bowyer, Michael stole the shower doors from his hotel room.

:D Thanks for the laugh. :XXROFL:

If that'st he case, they may want to determine the origin of those release valves ;)

On NASCAR Radio they were reporting that the teams were using shims/spacers of some sort to change the contour of the windshields by raising the edges. That enabled to gain an aero advantage somehow. They said that the windshields were taken and put on display after the first practice session. Also, all Toyotas were checked for a similar mod but these were the only three found to be in violation.

I heard that to, the windows are currently flush with the adjacent body panels, seems like if you raised them it would cause more turbulence??? I,m no aerodynamic wizard but I thought turbulance was a bad thing? especialy around the front of the car?

I wonder if it doesnt make the car more driveable when someone is pushing you. I remember them saying its hard to drive when being pushed in these cars cause the rear guy is steering you.

Maybe it lessens turbulance around the window frame at the edges of the windshield. Raising the edges of the panels may cause the air to pass over the frame rather than slamming into it.

I really like what Dodge did with the Challenger. Looking at the big trench on the front end, it seems the car would be terrible in the wind tunnel. The trench actually traps a bubble of air at the front and 'changes' the shape of the front end. That air bubble is very slick, and the aero is greatly improved.

They just explained it. They were tightening the top windshield bolts AFTER tech inspection which caused a lip above the windshield. That lip (the front edge of the roof) would cause the air to go up and over the spoiler.

Very interesting. I find it hard to understand why they will be penalized while JGR's very elaborate aero oil pans didn't.

lol...the front guy can't steer and the pusher can't see. <g>

The day that these guys quit trying to push the edge, we might as well have Australin Super Cars.

Bring It On!! Those cars are awesome. And I'll bet that every team owner and engineer worth a sh!t in that series is working the rule book to get any advangage they can.

Yea, that penalty takes them out of the championship hunt. All three teams suck so bad that they didn't even lose positions in the points.
