Nascar creates new rule for final race....

Why not have a contest instead? Have a drawing at Homestead, and 10 lucky fans are awarded shoes to throw on the track during the race.
Or better yet put the fans in the cars and let them drive them.

All those shoes would be aimed at Johnson and you know it! :p

Wow , hard to believe a 28 point lead is considered a big points lead today . Times have sure changed .

It's like having a 90-100 point lead a few years ago.. 23rd or better next weekend is a damn good cushion.

Yep. JJ is so sure of his lead he asked John Wes Townley to drive the 48 at Homestead.

I guarantee the 48 team doesn't think so. Not with a field of Joey's and Carl's who want to play bumper cars. :) It is theirs to lose and that sometimes isn't the best spot to be in

No, I know. I was just saying.. 28 points is more substantial than it sounds... Better than a stick in the eye that's for sure.

oh yeah, I hear that. Good spot to be in, but still, anything can happen. I remember Stewart, hitting a piece of a car that knocked a hole in his grill(could have taken his radiator out) and having to pass everyone to get back to Carl.

It ain't over until it's over. It was in 2004 when JJ qualified 39th at Homestead and almost lost his shot at the championship right away in turn one of lap one when Mike Bliss and Hermie Sadler wrecked right in front of him.

[7:15ish mark]

yep, good to have a cushion, but it's racing. He needed to have over 48 points to take the fun out of it. Didn't happen.

During post-race activities, Jimmie definitely seemed like he was a bit uneasy about his points lead. It's like he doesn't want to get too excited because he knows that something like last year could come and take him out of it just as fast. It's almost as if he'd rather just go to Homestead and race it out for the win instead of worrying about simply finishing in the top 23. Playing defense can be psychologically draining.

But that's how JJ does it when he has a point lead going into Homestead, which is one of the reasons his numbers there aren't so great.

Because he's always gone in with a substantial points lead, except in 2010 where he was actually trailing the leader going in. He finished 2nd there. He was also running first for while last year until the pit road mistake and subsequent engine failure.

And by always I mean the years he won the championship.

But hey, if he can finish 20th, I'm okay with it :D

Pretty sure it was a piece of Kurt Busch's transmission, which led to his infamous tirade at Dr Jerry Punch. That was one of the most unbelievable shows of driving I have ever seen, Tony was unstoppable that day. Him and Carl finish 1-2 in the race for a tie in total points, just a crazy comeback by Tony on that day I'll never forget it. I remember cursing Kurt Busch for blowing up and taking out Tony's rad but it all ended well for Smoke.

right. I doubt he breaks his point lead formula now.

Yep.

Does anyone else besides me HATE the new points system? The old one was perfect. If they wanted to put more emphasis on winning, they should have just given the winner 190 points instead of 175. Problem solved.

nascar hinted they felt the fans were too dumb to keep track of more than 1 point at a time.

I'm sure it was meant to make it seem like closer championship battles, but what it really does is knock guys out of contention faster than before.

That's how I took it. I was actually pretty offended.
It's actually the most common sense system they've ever had. One car = one point. If you win you get 43 pts depending on laps lead. Now, if they keep the process of collecting points & eliminated the chase it'd be PERFECT.

I liked the way the old system was tiered. There was a 5 point separation between the first several spots, then 4, then 3 throughout the rest of the field. There was more emphasis on finishing as high as possible. The difference between 4th and 5th should NOT be the same as 37th and 38th. Who cares if some fans didn't understand it? Is that going to turn them off of the sport? It's not like it was rocket science anyway.

The new system sucks.

I think one of the best changes that they made to the sport was the new points system. I only wish they had made that change before they implemented the Chase.

Why is it better? Should the battle for 33rd place really be as important as the battle for 3rd?

What if you ran in the top 5 all day & wrecked out battling for the lead in the final laps & finish 38th? Do you still deserve the same amount of points as the guy who ran in 37th all day and finished there?

What? You would have three less points than 37th, unless you led a lap and he didn't.

I'm not sure what your point is.

As far as I'm concerned the battle for first is the one that matters, under any points system.

I think the old points system was fine. All they had to do was award more bonus points for the winner, and it would have been perfect IMO.

I like the new way points are totaled per race, but without the Chase. IMO it's better because they are racing with the points they actually earned instead of having the points reset for dramatic effect.

How does that make the battle for 33rd as important as the battle for 3rd?
