The last of the Good Ol’ Boys is preparing to ride off into the sunset.

Sterling Marlin plans to enter Sunday’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway then, after over 30 years of life in the fast lane, will “probably” hang up his helmet.

“Will I miss it? Yeah, in some ways,” said Marlin, 52, who raced his way out of the Carter’s Creek tobacco fields and into international fame with back-to-back Daytona 500 victories in ’94 and ’95.

“But in some ways I’ll kinda be glad when it’s over. The sport has changed. It’s not much fun any more.”

One of the biggest changes is the steady decline of Southern drivers. They once dominated stock car racing; now they’re a vanishing species.

I remember when Sterling won back to back 500s. He and BigE always joked that it was the one race Sterling COULD win, and the one race Dale COULDN'T win.

He's indeed the last of the "good ol' boys."

Its about time he hung it up. No offence but going from a near championship a few years ago to driving for start in park teams hurt. What I will remember most about him was the Daytona 500 a few years back when he and Gordon got together and he was leading under the red flag and jumped out of the car and tried to pull the fender out himself.

I always liked sterling, but it seemed like after he got hurt a few years back and jamie mcmurray replaced him for a couple races he never was the same after that.

I agree with him. It's just not as much fun as it used to be

that means he is smarter than Morgan sheppard... sorry morgan, hang it up

Indeed, Sterling is one of a dying breed...that is being the son of another driver. Not sure if Sterling would have been able to make the scene if it weren't for his father, Clifton "Coo Coo" Marlin. However, Sterling stayed in NASCAR much longer than did his father. Coo Coo's carreer lasted 14 years in NASCAR. At least Sterling did win a race or two, more than his father (Coo Coo did win one of the twin races at Daytona).

It's past time for him to call it quits. He went from favorite to win the title in 03 I think to driving a Start and Park car.

That injury killed his career.

Sterlin is a good guy but the time has come, i loved the sound of that 4 car in 94 Runt Pittman knew how to build a plate motor, and how to make it breath, to bad NATZICAR told them not to bring that exhaust system back.

UPDATE: been told that Marlin says he is not retiring but would think about retiring in the off-season because it just wasn't fun anymore. Marlin has no plans to drive at Homestead. Marlin can be heard on a scheduled radio interview, Thurssday, Nov 19th on Race 2 Win Radio around 1:20pm/et.(11-19-2009)

Hey, lay off Morgan. He is racing for a greater reason than trying to be successful in racing. Like it says on the car, he is racing for Jesus, trying to spread the good news of Jesus through the medium of motorsports. It is something he is led to do, and being underfunded he has did a great job.
