NASCAR Fan Classifications
by Donna Adams

My niece asked me to help her with her homework, so of course I said yes. I asked what it was she needed to do, she said she needed to show an example of classifications and she decided to do classes of NASCAR Fans, this is what we came up with:

NEWBIES: These are the newest fans, somehow they have just discovered the sport, they appear lost and confused at races.

They may or may not have even picked a favorite driver yet. They will ask a lot of questions, such as, "What are the pretty colored flags for?", Why are people wearing those headphones? and mostly, "When are they gonna start?". Newbies are fun to observe, but try to be nice to them, they may one day become diehards and our influence will show up later on.

RACER CHICKS: These are those scantily clad, beautifully tanned, gorgeous gals who are only at the races for 1 of 2 reasons.

RACER CHICK REASON 1: To try to hook up with a driver, crew chief or crew member, which is totally understandable, I guess.

RACER CHICK REASON 2: To be noticed, that's it, that's all, they usually don't have a clue what's going on down there on the track, and can't name one driver. But they do get the most camera coverage, so try to stand near one if you want everyone to see your sign.

RACEFANS & RACEGIRLS: 1ST RACEGIRLS: Totally different from RACER CHICKS. These gals know what's going on, sometimes more than most of the men. They know the drivers, they know the cars, the makes, the car #'s, the crew, the standings, and almost everything else, just ask one. They are extremely loyal to their favorite driver and will be dressed accordingly. They will be overly prepared for the race, they won't have a program, they don't need one, they will have a scanner preprogrammed, they will most likely have binoculars and/or camera. You can recognize them because they are intently watching and listening to the race, unlike the RACER CHICKS who are watching guys.

Now the male counterpart to a RACE GIRL is just as loyal and intent and are called RACE FANS.

RACE FAN WIVES: These ladies are only at the races because of their RACE FAN husbands, (and fear of RACER CHICKS & RACEGIRLS). They will be dutifully clad in the colors of their husbands driver, but couldn't pick them out of a line up. They have to ask which car they are rooting for. They usually smile all day, but it is forced.

TECHIES: These guys/gals are more interested in the machines involved than any of the people. They can quote you gear ratios, tire camber, and spring rates without batting an eye. They are really interesting people, but they don't fair well with RACEFANS OR RACEGIRLS. They do however impress the NEWBIES & RACERCHICKS.

Next there are DIEHARDS: These can be of any age, sex, or race, but have an extensive history with the sport. Their parents were DIEHARDS but are now THROWBACKS. DIEHARDS went from race to race, and most knew at least one driver as Uncle. They have more knowledge than all other fans except THROWBACKS. They either remember themselves or have told of the races on the beach. DIEHARDS are very willing to share their knowledge, but be careful, sometimes they get wound up and they are hard to escape from.

Lastly are THROWBACKS: These are the old souls of NASCAR, not that they are all old, but THROWBACKS identify with racing from the old days. The rough and tumble days, when cars were truly showroom styles with greatly tuned engines. These were project cars, that were worked on all week, then raced on Saturday nights and finally on Sunday. THROWBACKS usually are quiet observers who know more than most crew chiefs.THROWBACKS are also very good resources and they will usually answer any question as long as they don't consider it stupid.

Now this experiment was done with a light hearted meaning, but I think most of us can identify to at least one class. One thing all race fans have in common is a love of the sport, and as long as we pass it on to the young ones it will continue for many years to come.

I proudly consider myself a combination- DIEHARD/RACEGIRL. Where do you fit in?

What is the male equivalent of a Racer Chick, either class one or two??

Whatever that is , That's me!!

Or a hybrid of a "throwback" and a "diehard"

Or maybe a hybrid of all three of the above!:D

Some folks woulc call it a "mongrel".

this is fun to joke around with, but I dont like the idea of putting humans into catagorys (stereotyping). Funny post though

Half race fan, half throwback, completely insane I suppose.

Gotta lighten up a bit, Smack. I doubt Donna and her niece meant to start a class war with their little list! :)

Really, smack. This was probably done just for fun. I have to agree with abooja. I don't think they were trying to stereotype people. Just trying to classify people. Therefore, I consider myself a.......Diehard/Racegirl. (I am also a Race Wife, but not by the definition above.)

I guess I'm one of those newbies, just three years into this sport.

But I know when the race starts, that's when someone yells
BOOGITY right?:beerchug:

This is funny! I love it. At first I thought I was a Techie, but I don't memorize a damn thing. I'm a "figure it out kinda" guy. I'm not a Diehard or a Throwback either, but I can zero in on most mechanical issues if I've got the time to think about it...and definately not a Racean either. I've got to be on the pit side (at Drag Strips we frequent), figuring something out...I thought this would be easy, but I'm cornfused.

The lady forgot 71Fans.

You see, we 71Fans are a breed apart. Doesn't matter what the number on the car is as long as the trailer only has one extra set of tires on it...and they have to be used.

We are the fans of the guy who is camped out in the sleeper of the truck that is pulling the trailer who's pit crew has to buy their own lunch and wash their own uniforms. We know the smell of burnt rear ends and can follow the engine oil trail to our fave drivers garage stall if we ever get lost.

We're the folks who wear nascar logo stuff cause our driver apparel is much too precious to wear to a track. While most fans covet things like used tires and crumpled fenders, we are happy as pigs in spit that we've got a lugnut or a sparkplug.

We're the folks who believe that on any given Sunday the home made car actually has a chance to win but think a 30th place finish only one lap back is a great accomplishment. Doesn't matter to us if our driver has never even had a top ten finish. We believe. We know it takes a great driver to even get close to the big dogs while driving the equivilant of school buses. And our drivers are as good as they get.

Yup, I think the lady left a few of us out.

I am lightened up, I thought the post was entertaining I gues I would be a newbie/diehard lol

Wonder what I am...

WAIT! Don't answer that...I'm sure I won't like the answer. ;)

I guess I am a Racefan/Diehard, been watching racing ever since I can remember with my dad.

I used to never watch it with him when I was younger, then I got a little older and realized all that great racing through the 80's I could have been watching with him, and all that lost time.

Now we go to the dirt track together and try to watch as many races as we can.

Thankfully, My dad made me a race fan. We went to EVERY race at the local dirt track (Volunteer Speedway, Bulls Gap TN....best on the planet btw) for 9 years running. Sandwiched around that were races at Atomic, Davy Crockett, Smoky Mountain, Newport, Lonesome Pine, Martinsville, Bristol, Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, Kingsport....you get the idea. We shared so many moments together....seeing Ritchie Evans, Buck Simmons, L.D. Ottinger, Richard Petty, Jody Ridley, Cale Yarbrough, Jack Ingram, Harry Gant, Jimmy Hensley, Tiny Lund, and so many other legends win races together formed a bond between us that we share to this day. Don't think for a second that I don't cherish that.

Y'all excuse me while I weep...

We still go to races together, thankfully. We still refuse to root for the same driver, but that's part of the fun. We could go to a race in Idaho, where we know not the first thing about who is good, and find different drivers to root for.

To commemorate what he has given me, I am trying my damndest to build him a collection of die casts from WC, all eras. Every one I give him gives us something else to talk about...TOGETHER. Dads, take your kids with you. They'll remember.

That was a really charming post, TWF. :)

I wish my dad were into racing instead of taking me to all those Met games when I was a kid...

My dad died when I was 23. Only 45 years old when he didn't wake up one morning. Something to do with a blood clot from injury while fighting a fire in Boston. We never did races but lots of Red Sox games. I sure wish we could have had more time together as adults.

Sorry to be so down but this thread brought back lots of memories. Don't waste any opportunities. Spend time with your Mom and Dad. They could be gone in an instant.

Pa and I used to go watch Dave when he would come to Riverside and Ontario. Prior to Riverside shutting down I would take my own son to campout in the infield during the SCCA and nascar weekends there, and flew him here to Vegas from his home with his ma for the first two Winston Cup races.

The daughter goes with me to Saturday night shortie stuff now and then but its been a pretty meager year as far as entertainment goes.

Part of my retirement plan was to turn her in to a trophy girl, but now that the Bushie Boys have left town I guess we missed out chance.

Jumping back on this thread again, I don't take my daughter to the races too much any more. BUT, she takes me with her! Academia wants her to go to Australia and New Zealand next year and gymnastics wants her to go to Portugal…you KNOW if she goes, I go too!
