"All they do is drive around in circles, it isn't a sport" I just stick puns back at the haters that are always telling me that. I am a product of the area where I grew up that is North Charleston South Carolina. When I was growing up, racecar drivers owned businesses & car dealerships. When you went to their dealerships, you got to meet them & sit in the cars & such. Hendrick Chevrolet sometimes would drop off crashed cars in the back on Monday after the race. When I was growing up, there was a restaurant called Hardee's where a man named Cale Yarborough made frequent appearances & gave out toy replicas of his car. When I was growing up, there was a place called "Quincy's" where a young Alan Kulwicki made an appearance. When I was growing up, racecar drivers faces were on billboards along the freeway, neighbors had Saturday night specials painted up like actual nascar racecars. Everyone had racing stickers on their back windshields. When NASCAR transporters approached on the freeway, you make way and show respect by honking. When you were at the track and a driver was approaching, you held the item in your hand you wanted autographed & waited in case he or she was busy. NASCAR was a blue collar sport for the serious hardworking man who came home and took off those steel to'es and cracked open that beer on the couch. Dale Sr's name might as well had been Dale NASCAR because the man, to me anyways, symbolized very strongly what it was all about. I remember sunny mornings in the garage area looking down at Buick regals & Monte Carlo's on jack stands with trunks & hoods open but was too young to know where & when only the words "Mountain Dew" & "Miller High Life" because those cars were parked close by next to eachother. I was never a smoker but I understood the sponsorship of RJ Reynolds tobacco, it was only natural and the name "Winston Cup" was the perfect name. For someone who already considered "Smokey & The Bandit" part 1 one of the greatest movies ever at a very young age, taking a liking to NASCAR was like adding whipped cream on top of a Georgia Pecan Pie. There were other sports that me & my friends watched growing up but NASCAR was king. Bill France Sr, Dale Earnhardt, Cale Yarborough, Bill Elliott, & Richard Petty were more important names than the President & Daytona Int. Speedway is our "The White House". These newer generation fans could never understand & haters on the outside looking in are just plain ignorant to the sport & most people always dislike what they don't understand. This is us, the true fans, WE ARE NASCAR NATION...
