Here you can read all about it, but it's plain and simple to me that NASCAR doesn't think that anything they are doing is at fault. In my humble opinion or IMHO for those who are forum savy, the problem with today's NASCAR isn't really who is showing it, how many commercials they run, when they cut to commercial etc., but rather what is being shown when it IS being shown on TV. Race fans, whether new or old, want to see action on the track. I'm sure there are plenty who would love to see those wild and crazy wrecks that the big speedways are famous for, but there are others who would love to see some good old fashioned racing, not necessarily at the front of the lineup. Also, as NASCAR has obviously recognized but has yet to actually allow, the fans love to see the real emotions from the drivers. But again, IMHO, the most important thing is to not try and make the series another IROC thing and allow the teams, manuafacturers and whomever, do their thing and gain an advantage. Yes, we love to see close racing, but we also know that the lowest funded team isn't going to be nearly as close to the highest funded team as it appears now. We also love to see tough old birds out there duking it out, not these pretty boys who can be on the cover of GQ. And what's this with the beards these days? Cripes, give me Jeffies eyebrows and cute mustache back. Oh but I forget, Jeffy is probably more responsible for where NASCAR is these days than anyone. It's funny how so many people are heralding the wins of the "old man", Mark Martin when probably ten years ago, they couldn't care less if a 50 year old man won. But the difference is that with few exceptions, a 50 year old man is a real rarity in Cup racing. Yeah, there are others who are getting close, but once you hit that 40 year old mark, you'd better be one of the top drivers on your team, or you will be history. NASCAR and it's sponsors are looking for those youngsters that will be easy on the eyes on TV and the sponsors. No longer does a driver have to go through those dreaded years driving for a lower team to be able to prove himself, no, these days, if a kid is going to be on a top team, he has to be able to prove himself right from the gitgo. And how can that kid get a reputation without showing what he's got to the fans? I mean, will Joey Lagano be over the hill when he turns 30?
NASCAR has plenty of problems to look at and decide what is causing the drain in viewership, but they have to look from within if they are going to be truely honest with themselves. They have to attract new fans in order to survive for a long time, but I fear that the average age of the "loyal" NASCAR fan keeps getting older and older. Yes, NASCAR is trying to attract new fans, but those that they are targeting are in my opinion, transient fans who go where the popular sports are at the moment.
