as I look at the sport it seems to me like we hear very little criticism of how nascar does things. I know nascar does muzzle the drivers quite a bit but we don't even hear anything from the media figures in the sport, some former drivers and crew chiefs. Last week we got wind of nascar's new idea to crown the champion and how france wants to create these game 7 type moments. I think universally everyone here viewed it as a gimmick and thought it was stupid. My question is why is noone in the nascar media speaking out about how stupid this is. Nascar was even lit up on the pocono facebook page over this. am I missing something or does nascar go to these people that don't drive any more or have any direct involvement with the competition and tell them they better shut up??

There's been a lot of media criticism of the playoff.

I've heard criticism and I've also hear praise for the proposed changes to the Chase. I've probably heard more questions than anything. Like I said in one of the other recent Chase threads, it does seem like most of the hosts of Sirius NASCAR Radio are behind the changes and they tend to have a lot of influence. I've heard calls that seem to be pretty much equal for and against the idea.

I found this when surfing around, Hamlin and Keselowski's opinion. BTW the Charlotte Observer is the only source credited with this whole story, and they quote "reliable sources"(nobody so far) as their source. Every other article I have read has mentioned the Charlotte Observer as their source if the info. I don't doubt their will be changes, but really so far the edict hasn't come down from on high...long live the king, or off with his head.

But driver Denny Hamlin posted a series of Tweets on Saturday afternoon that supported the format if NASCAR ultimately moves forward with the changes. NASCAR is expected to officially outline any changes later this month.

"This points system change is going to be a really good thing. Trust in it and watch how exciting each chase race is going to be," Hamlin posted.

Hamlin also Tweeted that every Chase race will now be as exciting as the September race at Richmond, which is the final race to set the Chase field. He also responded to two fans who criticized the format. One argued it was "artificially construed excitement" instead of the traditional consistency that NASCAR used for decades in crowning its champion.

"Consistency will keep you up top," Hamlin replied.

Hamlin received support from 2012 Cup champion Brad Keselowski, who replied on Twitter to him that he also liked the reported new format.

"Guess we may be in the minority here," Keselowski said.

Indirectly yes they do.
Nascar has nurtured their own butt kissing parade for years. The powers love their yes men and the conditioners have been in place long enough to encode and an unwritten SOP to all, including retired drivers.

On the flip side Nascar is the best stock car racing outfit going, so if you want to drive, or be a respected old timer some respect in return is due. A lot of things could go wrong real fast and in spite of some problems Nascar does a good job and has a good operating model, still the best imo.

I doubt that Nascar could punish any old timers not actively involved. But anybody can be ignored, they probably have some influence on what/who the networks cover as well.

Nascar may be the most corporate driven sport of all, at least when considering the dependency of those involved (drivers, teams, etc). White shirts running an enterprise financed by other white shirts usually want more boring yes men.
It is the nature of the beast, it will never change.
A trade off to participating or even enjoying the sport.

Nascar takes a dim view of those critical of them. The only one I can think of that told them exactly what they didn't want to hear was Dale Sr.

Plenty of media people criticizing the proposed Chase format. Not so much from drivers, at least publically.

I did some looking around again I haven't seen any specific comments lighting up nascar from any members of the media. we know they have privately fined drivers for saying critical things that IMO were not that bad. I am thinking they do alot of behind the scenes talking to get people to tow the line.

Drivers are probably in favor of it because they have a better than average chance to say they made the chase - it looks good on the resume.

I listen to the NASCAR channel on Sirius quite a bit, and it's pretty obvious that NASCAR has those guys in their back pocket. As far as other media outlets, I find that the reaction to the proposed changes has been pretty much mixed.

Jim Utter's reliable. He doesn't make stuff up.

think about it, would you publicly trash Nascar if your job was at stake? The press plane wouldn't have you on the manifest and your track pass wouldn't be there at the track. Nascar can refuse to admit anyone they choose, just like corporate america does.

If this happens then making the chase would mean less than nothing.

we will see how accurate and reliable he is when the king and his court announce the changes. Until then "reliable sources" will have to do. Who knows, Nascar might have shut him up about going any farther with his scoop, reliable sources report.

Tony and Kyle B have bashed NASCAR in the past and now they realize where their paycheck comes from.

Yeah :), and don't forget Denny, and Kez. Darrell has a saying, "you need Nascar, Nascar doesn't need you" wonder where he heard that?:) right or wrong, the king and his court rule the day, and that extends to the press also.

He doesn't just publish nonsense for the sake of getting it first.

At this point, change to the sport > no change to the sport, and I think most people really close to it know it. Whether or not this turns out to be a good change or terrible change is TBD...but at least it's something.

I actually think what happened is nascar floated a trial balloon. This story has all the fingerprints of a leak to judge the reaction to it. its late January if they were really really confident of the changes why weren't they announced in December?? I mention all this because I am really surprised no driver, no former driver, no one that has every actually been involved with the sport. no media member that I have seen has came out and said what in the world are they thinking. no one has questioned the entire championship hinging on one race. maybe its the off season and the news coming out of nascar is actually pretty limited this time of year. however I am sure if they don't like what they are reading a phone call is made and they do what they can to shut that person up. if they would fine a driver in private for comments they didn't like, what prevents them from calling members of the media and telling them to shut up?? nothing.

There have been numerous media members voicing their opinions on NASCAR Radio. Some like it. Some don't. Pretty much like anything else. Jayski's site also has plenty of links to articles on the subject. Twitter as well. It's not hard to find opinions out there.

Next Monday starts the round of television opinions starting with RaceHub.

If everyone is under the impression that NASCAR is telling these mouthpieces what to say then they are sending mixed signals.

utter only got info nascar wanted "leaked".......nothing more.
