NASCAR Or Racing In General A Sport?

Alot of people that don't watch racing or some people that do watch it say that NASCAR is not a legit sport. They say it is just driving fast and turning left an that drivers don't have be in shape like football players or whatever.

They say when the cars wreck that it is not like when a football player gets hit. Now for what I think about this NASCAR and any other form of Motorsports is a just that a Sport. Drivers race the cars at 180mph for close to 4 to 5 hours each weekend and I don't know about anyone else but I have seen racers die in wrecks ok I have never seen that in the NFL ( Not that I like seeing people die in racing I wish it would never happen )

But I mean come on really racing is a sport because if it's not then Track In Field is not a sport either and should be taken out of the Olympics right?

Quite frankly, I don't care whether or not someone thinks racing isn't a sport. Those people probably don't even watch racing anyways, so their opinion of the sport is pretty skewed. I'd bet anyone who says racing isn't a sport would more than likely call golf a sport. While most golfers look to be in pretty good shape, ever see Craig Stadler?

Again I say, who cares?

Webster defines 'sport' as:

"a physical activity engaged in for pleasure"

Makes sense...

NO sport could ultimately be considered 'not for pleasure' (work). ..that's why we played them as kids.
Physical activity, well it certainly takes some physical ability. I've never seen a racer get out of the car who isn't sweating! (I won't even go into the coordination and reaction times needed). There's a whole range of physical demands in the sporting world...I'm sure most Tour de France bikers consider most athletes out of shape slobs.

So I'd say Webster's dictionary would certainly consider it a sport.

Now a better question would be is Ice-skating a sport!?
I personally think 'choreography & music' automatically disqualifies an activity from being a sport! We'll see if Webster amends its definition!

Agreed........... who cares. :p

I remember having a pretty heated conversation on a football message board about it. Turned out that later that night, there was a special on like the Discovery Channel or something about what racers go through. I'll see if I can find that convo.

Racing is definitely a sport. Those who say it isn't have no idea because they know nothing about racing in the first place.

SO................................................using the definition quoted from Webster's, does this mean fornication is a sport ????
Fornication is physical activity engaged in for pleasure. And procreation. ;)

Oh, Lord help me, Whizzer, that got my day off to a rousing start.

I think you may have hit on something. :)

ROTFLMAO

Thanks Whiz, that was great.

But back to the subject at hand, when an argument such as this arrises, it mostly comes from someone who doesn't care for one sport or another and for what reason, I don't know. I ask, why would a person who doesn't even like racing even concern themselves with this? Could it be that they are threatened by the fact that "their" favorite sport might be overtaken by this so called "non sport"? It's usually a childish argument anyway, and as can be shown by this thread, there are many things that may or may not be a sport, but who cares? Obviously those who just don't think that racing is a sport. Now who cares about what they think anyway?

I'm with you, buck. When I look at drivers climbing out of their cars, totally spent and barely able to stand up, questioning their athletic ability is silly.

And you are right --- who cares about what they think? :)

Since nascar drivers aren"t steroid taking - pot smoking -thugs....I guess it's not a "sport".

I have this argument with my cousin all the time. Mostly it’s in good fun. I shut him up the last time the topic came up by stating that racing, in any form (cars, running, bicycle, etc.), is probably the most pure form of competition there is. It's a group of people trying to get from point A to point B faster than the next guy. Pick a driver and watch one race and pull for that driver and you will be hooked, or at least understand why people like it.

The only reason I think he understood where I was coming from was because he runs marathons a few times a year. He has since watched a race and told me that he gets it but it's just not for him.

YES...Nascar is a sport and Jimmy Spencer is it's primo Athlete.

I played hockey and softball growing up and I guess considered them sports.

But never when my two borthers and I used to raid junkyards for parts to fix up some pieces of junk and race them on old dirt roads did I ever think that it was a sport. Illegal- yes, but a sport - I don't know about that one.

Edited to say: I should add that we were kids - not that it makes it right but I guess we didn't know any better and I now avoid taking things that don't belong to me :)

Ask your cousin how he would feel if someone wins a marathon juiced up on roids or who had a special pair of sneakers that no one else did.

I don't think he would care. He does it for fun. Pretty sick, huh?
