KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- NASCAR officials plan to review an incident Saturday when Tony Stewart uttered an obscenity during the ESPN2 telecast of the Saturday morning Nextel Cup practice session at Kansas Speedway.

Stewart was talking to driver Robby Gordon before walking toward two ESPN camera operators. Stewart looked at one camera operator and said: "What? Get the [expletive] away from me."

Jennifer Powell, NASCAR's senior manager of broadcast communications, said NASCAR officials would review the videotape before making any decisions about a possible penalty for Stewart.

George McNeilly, senior director of communications for ESPN/ABC, said the broadcast team handled the situation properly.

"It was an unfortunate incident," McNeilly said. "Immediately after the words were spoken, Dr. Jerry Punch [lead announcer] apologized to the viewers on ESPN2. In our view, the photographer was doing his job."

McNeilly was asked why a tape-delay was not used on the telecast.

"We use a tape-delay system for two-way radio conversations, much the same way you would use a tape delay for a radio talk show with random callers," McNeilly said. "We don't feel the need to use a tape-delay system when working with professional athletes."

Stewart hasn't commented about the incident.

"This circumstance is unbelievably rare in our 28 years, given all the programming we do," said McNeilly.

Stewart has had several conduct-related problems this season. He was placed on probation by NASCAR in April for failing to fulfill his media obligations after the race at Phoenix.

Two days later in his radio show, Stewart questioned the integrity of NASCAR, implying that race officials sometimes throw phony debris cautions. He equated NASCAR to professional wrestling.

Stewart was called to the NASCAR hauler at Talladega, Ala. later that week. After that meeting, he apologized for his comments.

Stewart again found himself in trouble with NASCAR officials when he uttered an obscenity on television after winning the Allstate 400 on July 29. Stewart was fined $25,000 and docked 25 points for that incident.

Stewart ranks second in the Chase for the Championship, only two points behind Jeff Gordon.

I didn't see the interview. When is Tony going to learn... One of the reasons Tony is my favorite driver is the fact that he doesn't play the PC role, but he knows the penalty for cursing during an interview can be a docking of points. If he gets docked points it's his own dang fault.

Tony is a fricken looser that thinks he is the best thing since sliced bread.
What an idiot. I have news for you Tony. You mabey be a great race driver but you're a bad person.

First off, from what I understand, this was NOT an interview. They were just in the garage area showing what was going on in the area with an OPEN MIC. Nascar better think long and hard about this one.

Sounds to me like Tony did this on purpose. If he looked in the camera first and then did it. IMHO Tony was daring Nascar to fine him.

But everytime Tony opens his trap, Crap comes out....Tony has the option to walk away without saying anything. He chooses to make an ass out of himself instead.

I love his attitude. If it were not for guys like him NASCAR would be even more boring these days.

I agree with that too, but what gives the reporters the right to listen in on private conversations among the drivers?

There's no reason for ESPN to air that. I realize that Stewart should know better but history hasn't proven he doesn't so put a delay on the broadcast.

As far as NASCAR is concerned, it is a non-issue. It was reported on Raceday that since it wasn't an interview situation, just a camera with an open mike, Tony did nothing wrong.

No harm, no foul.

Stewart will not be penalized for expletive

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Tony Stewart will not be penalized for an obscenity uttered during a live ESPN2 telecast of practice Saturday at Kansas Speedway, NASCAR Vice President Jim Hunter said Sunday afternoon.

Stewart was leaning into the driver window of Robby Gordon talking to him and when he turned to leave, he used an expletive in asking the camera to get out of his way.

The microphone, which was on the camera, picked up the audio although the broadcasters were also talking at the time. The curse word was audible but wasn't totally clear.

ESPN2 immediately apologized on the air.

"At the present time, I don't think there will be any penalties coming down as a result," Hunter said. "There were some very unusual circumstances surrounding that incident. We will just move on."

Hunter said the situation was different than where drivers have been penalized points for cursing during live interviews. Juan Pablo Montoya was penalized earlier this year for an obscene gesture but did not lose points.

"It wasn't a live interview and he didn't know that they were live," Hunter said about the Stewart situation. "It was just a cameraman and he was walking away from a conversation that had taken place."

If this were away from the track I'd more than agree with you. But, the reporters have a right to be there. We all expect them to bring us closer to the Nascar world. If this were Carl Edwards what do you think he would have done. For that matter let's put Robby Gordon leaning into Tony's car. I don't think he would have responded the same way. Would Jeff, Jimmie or Lil'E have done the same. I don't think they would.
This lies at the feet of Tony, IMO. And, the fact that Nascar has shown a lack of testicular fortitude in reigning in Tony and his apparent disregard towards everyone else is troubling. He should not be above the rules of civility.

I agree with you BP. Jack Roush has been steaming all week over the penelty Carl got because of the chase. Now he may have a leg to stand on.
