Nascar senior tour, what do ya think?

Here's one suggestion, create a tour of six or so races at short tracks and maybe a road course too.
Throw in those drivers who are retired, such as Harry Grant and DW that still have a desire to race .
And I bet many drivers would return for a chance to race in a compact tour, of short tracks.
Hell Nascar could included North Wilkesboro and Rockingham on the schedule, now that would be something!

I think that is a good idea, maybe some of the drivers that drive way past their prime wouldn't be so reluctant to retire if they had somewhere to race.

This was done a few years ago. ESPN (if memory serves me right) ran a series in conjunction with maybe the old Thursday Night Thunder thing; the oldtimers all raced with brand new Jaguar sports coupes.
Nothing much ever came of it. I don't think it even lasted the whole season.

Remember that most of the "old timers" who have retired from racing have more than enough other business interests to keep them busy.

That sounds like a good idea. And maybe have it like it used to be.

this idea keeps popping up, but i've never liked it. if a retired driver still has the reflexes required to be in a racecar, there are places he could race...there are too many series and short tracks around right now that would benefit from having a big name former cup driver there to give them their own series.

on the other hand, if a driver no longer has the reflexes to race, he shouldn't be competing anywhere, let alone against a bunch of other drivers who've lost too much to compete anymore.

don't get me wrong, i am sentimental, and i'd love to see the legends on the racetracks...but realistically, i think having a bunch of older guys with slower reflexes and who are more prone to injury racing against a bunch of other old and slow guys in any type of car that would be fun to watch is a recipe for disaster and would be one of the worst ideas ever.

If you don't like this idea then you, along with most of the people responding, must be a recent fan. I think the main reason this isn't done is because only the France family could afford to supply the cars and Humpy Wheeler supply the "showmanship" for it.

I was involved in just such a race that was held at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the the early ninties. They supplied Cup cars for several retired drivers, some in their sixties and seventies, to race on a specially constructed oval in front of the main grandstands that replicated the old Bowman-Gray Stadium track.

Two things stood out plainly after the race was over. One being, Once a racer always a racer, proven by the "heart" shown and the , shall we say, creative lines taken through the corners by real racers. And the second thing being that all the high tech shop personel like shock technitions, weather men, and fuel chemists would have to find other work or learn to run an English Wheel because a good body man would be an essential part of every team. And not to "tweak and finese" the pampered and highly massaged bodywork of today but to put the fenders and doors back on after the real racers got done with'em.

I was there and got some killer footage and while it rained off and on, there were few that left because they knew they were gonna see something very special that day. It really was special for me because I had seen many drivers that I had lettered cars for win on our local track but this was the only time someone I had lettered a car for won at CMS. Had to pull for Elmo since Jr. had gotten too far behind for even him to catch up. You know that his chances for a break went out the window when he bumped France in the pace car. LOL

I for one would love to see 8 to 10 races a year featuring Harry, Cale, Richard, David Pearson, Benny, DW and others to say the least! Put them in Hooters pro cup cars or Dash cars. They can bring $ into it I'm sure. I think it would sale to the public.

I'd rather see that than IROC any day!

recent fan...if you consider a 31 y/o that has been watching racing all his life, and remembers going to a yarborough fan club meeting in '78 a recent fan, then i guess i am.

but, i consider myself to be a rather long time fan, and i wouldn't want my old favorites to go out there and get injured...as i said, with age comes slower reflexes and increased risk of injury...

Yep, I would consider you a recent fan. I saw my first race when I was 8 in 1958 so I got you by a few years. I spent the day before the Charlotte race under the big Winston tent with my models and my heroes and it was great. You should have seen how those guys came alive with the attention and the chance to play wrinkle fender. It was great but I don't think it will ever happen again. 'Course I wouldn't have thought it would have happened that first time either. Never can tell.

ok...so everybody younger than you is a recent fan...that's cool. but being a recent fan has nothing to doo with my opinion that if a driver still has the reflexes to race, he should race in an established series, and if he doesn't, he shouldn't race anything.

rather than gant, dw, yarbourough, etc, competing against each other in some race that'll be shown tape delayed on espn 2, i'd rather see whoever can still drive strap himself into a truck or busch car and show the young guys what racing's all about.
