NASCAR tried to even out the competition in the Nationwide Series on Wednesday by ordering all teams using Toyota motors to squeeze down their horsepower before this weekend's race in Indianapolis.

NASCAR recently sent 10 different motors for testing, and found that David Reutimann's Toyota was the best with an estimated 3 percent horsepower advantage over the competition. JGR's No. 18 car - which Busch drove to victory at Chicago right before the motors were tested - was second.

JGR builds its own motors for its two Nationwide Series cars. The rest of the Toyota engines in that series and the Craftsman Truck Series come from Triad Racing Development, a Bill Davis-owned company that leases engines.

This could get interesting...

LMAO, you don't think they were winning because of talent, do you. :D

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Though results of recent dynamometer tests showed greater parity between the Nationwide Series engines of Toyota and those of other manufacturers, NASCAR issued a technical bulletin informing teams of a rule change that will reduce Toyota's horsepower.

"At all Events, unless otherwise specified, all engines with a cylinder bore spacing less than 4.470 inches must compete using a tapered spacer with four (4) 1.125-inch diameter holes. At all Events, unless otherwise specified, all engines with a cylinder bore spacing of 4.470 inches or more must compete using a tapered spacer with four (4) 1.100-inch diameter holes. Unless otherwise authorized, the carburetor restrictor will be issued by NASCAR."
-- Amendment to Section 20A -- 5.10.4, Nationwide Series Rule Book

Dyno tests after the June 21 race at The Milwaukee Mile revealed a significant horsepower advantage for Toyota over Ford and Chevrolet. Toyota's peak horsepower number was 632, compared with 611 for Ford, 612 for Chevrolet and 628 for Dodge.

After the July 11 race at Chicagoland Speedway, NASCAR took 10 engines -- three Toyotas, three Chevys, two Fords and two Dodges -- to its Research & Development Center in Concord, N.C., for further evaluation. The engine from David Reutimann's No. 99 Toyota was the top performer, but top-to-bottom, the test produced a much narrower range than the numbers from the Milwaukee test.

This is one of the reasons that many people have given up on NASCAR. When one manufacturer/team finds an advantage, it's ain't fair and the crying begins. Way back when...Bill Elliott and his brothers found something in their Ford Thunderbird that made them tops in all but the short circuits. NASCAR changed their rules to "make it fair for everyone" and was the beginning of making the Cup circuit as close to IROC as possible. But, even then, teams began to work overtime to get that advantage over other teams. When a team found something, NASCAR would either outlaw it or show it to the other teams, but usually, they would take the advantage away. I'm certainly not a Toyota fan, but they worked and worked and after a total failure last year, they turned it all around and what happens, NASCAR is taking all of that away. Well, y'all wanted IROC and with the common templates and all but the same engines, yer gettin just what you want. I can see it now... in the year 2525, Chevy and Ford teams are complaining that the Honda team robots are smarter than their's. NASCAR has decided that all robots have to have the same chip, making them exactly the same. The results will be that every car will run around the track at exactly the same speed with no passing allowed. Each team will be allowed one pole position and the lineups will change weekly. After 43 races, the championship will be a tie and for the first time in NASCAR history, each and every team will share in the top honors. (I don't need the sarcasm smilie here do I? I think that even Andy can see as much)

You know an old daytona 500 race where bill elliot was his own team with ernie. And they kept talking about the engine ernie built and all that and it was cool stuff. You cant find that anywhere in nascar anymore.

Personally this is why i like DLM racing. Yes you can just go to a manufacturer and get a car built for you ready to go, but you can also be innovative. Ive heard of drivers that get the center section of the car and then they build the front and rear themselves. You can be innovative and all you have to really do is follow body rules and weight rules. Same with engines its open engines so they can try all this stuff that they figure out. Its everything that NASCAR is now missing to me.

I think that's why robby and Tony, among others, branch outside of NASCAR so much. Robby goes and runs anything with a steering wheel, and Tony does the same thing. Get out of NASCAR's equality bubble and actually get some competition going.

Hate to say it like this, But you could give Kyle Busch a 4 cyl honda Vtec and he would still win....:beerbang:

Soooo, Dodge is only four HP's below Toyota, wheres all their wins?? Oh, I forgot, they don't have Kyle. lol

Don't mind me, I'm only being obnoxious. Duane

I read somewhere that it’s not so much the engines as much as the Gibbs teams have figured out how to make the cars turn in the corners better than everyone else. They seem to be very secretive about what they are doing to the front end of the car.

I'll post a link if I can find the article again.

The way I see it, engines should be pretty darn equal, but I think Nascar has gotten too strict on the handling, aerodynamics and those areas of the car.

It's just not interesting to see a Dodge Viper race a Ford Escort.

But let em tinker away with spoilers, springs, steering this and that.... there's plenty of room to find advantage there...

Toyota disappointed with rule change: Toyota Racing Development President Lee White said he was “extremely disappointed” in NASCAR’s decision to alter the spacer applied to Toyota’s Nationwide Series engine, which will result in lost horsepower. “In our opinion, there is no technical justification to penalize the Toyota engine utilized in the Nationwide Series,” White said in a statement released Wednesday evening. “The success of the Toyota Camry this year in the Nationwide Series is the result of hard work and achievement by all of our race teams ... working in conjunction with [Toyota Racing Development].” White said the manufacturer will work with its teams to make sure they remain competitive despite the setback. He warned that NASCAR’s decision “could be more far-reaching than simply mandating Toyota adjust its Nationwide engine.” “The real impact will be felt by the Toyota teams as they adjust to the change, work to remain competitive for the remainder of this season and attempt to line up their sponsorships for next year,” he said.(SceneDaily.com)(7-23-2008)

Toyota is just going to make sure there cars are more balanced now. They dont have the extra power to be a crutch to setups. But with drivers like they got that understand the chassis it shouldn't be a problem....im not a yota fan but when your favorite drivers keep going that way you gotta watch them at sometime.

As much as I hate Yota in the NASCAR ranks, its a damn spec car with decals. I happen to like the Busch Brothers, one in a Yota and one in a Dodge. One winning and one got lucky!! LOL Duane

After watching NASCAR Now last night I believe NASCAR made a big mistake by taking away from Toyota. To paraphrase Mike Wallace, the only team that was dominating the N'wide series was JGR. It affects all of the Toyota teams, though. I also saw the numbers from the dyno tests; it was really only about a 10-12 horsepower difference.
It really sucks because it appears that NASCAR is penalizing a team(s), manufacturer(s) for doing their research. If a manufacturer is able to get more horsepower from the same cubic inch then maybe the other manufacturers need to submit a redesigned cylinder head, intake manifold or other engine component in an effort to produce more horsepower.
Don't penalize someone for doing well.
