I’ve seen a couple times on my FB feed where NASCAR is to go all electric by 2021. I have not found anything official from NASCAR or any mainstream media so I hope it’s BS.

Question is, would you still watch if/when it happens? I really doubt I will. I’ve watched a formula E race once and couldn’t finish. Just seems kinda.....toyish. Could you imagine being able to have a conversation at Bristol? Ugh...lol

Sources, please.

What exactly do we mean when we say "NASCAR is going electric"? If someone means "Cup teams will compete exclusively with electric vehicles", don't believe a word of it. If someone means "NASCAR will introduce a new electric series, or convert Trucks or Xfinity to electric", I'd say there was a pretty good chance.

Would I watch? That depends on what the racing looks like. I'm not going to rule it out until I've see the product a few times. Frankly, I'd enjoy being able to have a conversation at the track.

If it wasn't April 1st yesterday, I would've believed it. Anything is possible under Brian France.

I can’t remember when I read it but it was before yesterday. If you google nascar to electric by 2021 you will see same sources (YouTube, Reddit, etc). Like I said nothing mainstream or from NASCAR.

God I hope not. The cars are half of it for me...

YouTube and Reddit aren't sources. The people who post the content sometimes are sources, but sometimes they're just reposting content that originated somewhere else.

Lets be honest here, if this was anything but a Aprils Fools Day joke, dont ya think would already know about it?, I mean , 2021 is a little bit under three years away, all the planning and getting things ready would be underway now for that to even happen by 2021, you just dont wake up one day and say I want to go all electric racing:laugh:

As I stated, it was Fri or Sat. Still could be AF but odd to post it days before.

Whatever, maybe it was supposed to be. Still wonder if it would kill NASCAR in your opinions? It would probably lose my interest.

It's funny how many people saw this, didn't bother actually watching the accompanying video, and completely believed it to be the truth.

I would be done with NASCAR for sure, unless they found a way to make the noise and smells and anything else you can only get with gasoline powered cars.

Why not rotate which date April Fool's falls on during the month? This way there is an actual chance people with blood flowing to their brains could get taken by a prank news story?

As for the hypothetical, of course I would watch. I watch because I'm a fan of racing, not a devotee of one kind of propulsion technology.

I think that’s what they did to me. Seeing it Friday and Sat threw me off.

I doubt they could even run 50 laps on a full charge.

And that's the simplest reason to know the story was BS. The technology doesn't even exist yet for an actual NASCAR Cup type of race with battery power. It might NEVER exist. The race would have to either be incredibly short, have a pit stop every 50 miles for a battery change, or each driver would have to have 8 cars to run the race.

Isn’t coal power the bestest emerging technology?

Good points on the battery discharge. And a battery that runs the motors isn't the size of a regular car battery is it? I'd think it would have to be pretty substantial is size. Be at least a 2-3 person job to lift it out and replace. Maybe not.

There is just something to be said about the thunder these engines produce and the power you can FEEL as they go by. It's more than wind....just wouldn't be the same.

Formula E have been doing this for a few years now and just next season they'll be doing their ~50-minute races in one car. And that's on tight, narrow, slow street circuits. With too many big-name OEMs to name. So I think it's safe to say that kind of tech working its way into a series with 500-mile races at high sustained speeds in 3300-pound vehicles is not something that'll happen in the near future. And I'm sure NASCAR and the OEMs know the fan base dig NA V8s as much as they do.

The most we might get by the end of the current TV contract is maybe a national series with some technology like that as a playground/novelty thing.

April Fool's Joke until it actually happens in the not too distant future. The combustion engine is lying on it's death bed. Although, the recent repeal of fuel mileage standards might have added 15-20 years for the combustion engine.

Combustion engine on its death bed....really?

I'm not sure why there's the need to take a political stance in the NASCAR section?

Anyhow as far as NASCAR turning electric by 2021, that's already been disproved. Should NASCAR ever take that final step, it would be just that, it's final step.

It's not political, it's stating that fuel mileage standards were just done away with so the combustion engine, like coal, isn't dead yet.

Electric cars are the future and one day racing will embrace it. That or racing will all be on a computer.

Electric cars aren't the future, they are but one more scam, sham out there. The races are a joke. Solar and wind are something made from natural occurrences, and they have solar powered races, but I think a good horse at this point would be a faster way to travel.

Interesting opinion. What's the connection? Wouldn't lower standards increase the rate of consumption of oil, reducing the supply more quickly? Wouldn't it also result in increased demand, driving up the price of gas?
