NASCAR's biggest turkeys of 2009
By Doug Demmons - The Birmingham News

Kyle Busch -- His poor imitation of Pete Townshend left spectators at Nashville Superspeedway and TV viewers at home stunned as he grabbed the hand-painted Gibson guitar trophy and smashed it on the pavement. He thought it would be a cool celebration. It wasn’t. Sam Bass, who spent many hours creating the design on the instrument only to watch Busch smash it in about 10 seconds, wasn’t laughing. On the plus side, at least Kyle didn’t set the guitar on fire and kick over the amps.

Jeremy Mayfield -- The case of Jeremy Mayfield v. NASCAR is starting to deteriorate faster than a meth addict’s dental work. A change of venue should be granted moving this case from federal court to the Jerry Springer Show. Mayfield’s ex-stepmother would have to be on the show, but there would need to be extra security guards on hand when the chairs start to fly.

Danica Patrick -- Enough teasing already! Never in the history of NASCAR has there been so much attention paid to the future plans of a potential part-timer in the Nationwide Series. Her Indy sponsor, GoDaddy.com, says an announcement is coming on Monday. Let’s hope it’s more than another shower commercial.

Dave Blaney -- Perfected the art of start-and-park with eight last-place finishes and 27 finishes of 40th or worse. His car vibrates so much it violates Alabama’s obscenity laws.

Brad Keselowski -- Rookie got plucked and served up on a platter at Homestead by Denny Hamlin. The only thing missing was the cranberry sauce. By the end of the year the fans’ choice as Most Popular Driver in the Nationwide Series was leading the standings for the Least Popular Driver in the Garage trophy.

So the turkeys are the interesting people? I guess he wants more JJ Robots.

Eh I can see why Kyle Busch smashing a guitar that some guy spent hours working on would be a d*** move on his part. I would be mad if I was Sam Bass to be honest.

I actually like Kyle B...but that guitar smashing incident was unacceptable

Where's the link to that little bit of info?

I've never heard of Sam Bass making stickers.

I can't find the interview, but at the time I recall reading an interview with Kyle where he mentioned that the hand painted part was a sticker and he noticed that when he cut it up.

When they interviewed Sam Bass, He said it was a hand-done airbursh, and that only 2 existed.

Shows that Kyle Busch knows as much about painting as he does about guitars and music. It was probably airbrushed on to something like a layer of vinyl to make the surface smoother.

That guitar smashing was one of the dumbest things I have seen in the world of racing. Not only did Busch not understand that this type of guitar was nearly indestructible, but he also showed his failure to understand who did guitar smashing and why.

Pete Townshend actually started the trend by accident, and has since been done for a variety of reasons. Some out of rage as part of the song, or to emphasize the uniqueness of the performance.

Plus, for musician a guitar is their tool. Smashing it is the music equal of doing a burnout until the tires or the engine blows. No musician has ever gotten up on stage and smashed a Grammy which is what Kyle did.

Kyle won the thing, if he wants to smash it then that's his business

Maybe so, but he could have done his "breaking it apart for his crew" off camera. He ended up insulting not only Sam Bass, but the people of NASHVILLE where the race was held (Nashville=home of MUSIC), among thousands of others viewing on TV. The sponsors made a bee line out of Victory Lane so as not to be seen with him. Sure there were those who thought it was "cool" but the majority of people thought it was the most idiotic, disrespectful thing he ever did. Kyle had to learn a bit about the FANS who come to the races and pay his paycheck. I think he had a good "talking to" after that little stunt. I heard he was not invited back to Nashville to compete in anything.

Mayfield is the biggest turkey.

I think I would want to add the sanctioning body along with Mayfield. If they weren't so secretive about what is actually on their banned list for Cup drivers, among other things they decided to keep silent about, Jeremy would have gone away, a long time before now.

I agree. He could have handled that a lot better. Just because he "won" it doesn't mean he gets to be an asshat about it.

Again, this is a trophy. An award for doing well. Not a tool like it is for a guitarist. This would be like Sean Connery getting up on stage and smashing an Oscar for Best Actor.

To me, it's the very definition of hypocrisy to complain about how the drivers don't have personalities and are just corporate drones and then condemn them when their self-expression doesn't conform to accepted social norms

LMAO. It isn't hypocrisy or personality.

It is stupidity, bad manners, lack of respect, and a lack of proper "bringing up".
