Nearly half the 42 cars entered for Friday’s Nationwide race at Richmond do not list a sponsor on the entry blank, filling the spot either with TBA, TBD or the race team’s name (something done only when a team does not have someone paying to be on the car). Three of the top 12 in the Nationwide points are listed as not having a sponsor, so it’s not just start-and-park teams that are hurting.

This comes less than a week after FAS Lane Racing, a Cup team owned by former crew chief Frank Stoddard, issued a press release that its seat is available for the two road course races this year. Stoddard is quoted in the release as saying: “We want a driver and sponsor combination that gives us the best chance for success.’’

It’s tough out there for NASCAR teams (just like it’s tough for many race fans in these economic times).

Here’s a look at the 17 drivers without a sponsor listed on the entry blank as of Monday afternoon (understand teams might pick up sponsors as the week continues and this list could change)

Car No. 7 … Josh Wise … JR Motorsports …sponsor TBA

15 … Timmy Hill … Rick Ware Racing … sponsor Rick Ware Racing

16 … Trevor Bayne … Roush Fenway Racing … sponsor: Roush Fenway Racing

19 … Mike Bliss … TriStar Motorsports … sponsor TBA

31 … Justin Allgaier … Turner Motorsports … sponsor TBA (team says Wolf Pack Rentals will be on the car as it was last week)

39 … Charles Lewandoski … Go Green Racing … sponsor TBA

40 … Scott Wimmer … Key Motorsports … sponsor TBA

41 … Carl Long … Rick Ware Racing … sponsor Rick Ware Racing

44 … Jeff Green … TriStar Motorsports … sponsor TBD

49 … Dennis Setzer … Jay Robinson Racing … sponsor TBA

52 … Tim Schendel … Jimmy Means Racing … sponsor TBA

68 … Matthew Carter … Rick Ware Racing … sponsor Rick Ware Racing

75 … Johnny Chapman … Rick Ware Racing … sponsor Rick Ware Racing

79 … Tim Andrews … 2nd Chance Motorsports … sponsor TBA

87 … Joe Nemechek … NEMCO Motorsports … sponsor TBA

89 … Morgan Shepherd … Victory In Jesus Racing … sponsor Victory in Jesus Racing

99 … Ryan Truex … Pastrana Waltrip Racing … sponsor Pastrana Waltrip Racing

Notice that among the drivers without sponsors for Friday’s race at Richmond at this point is:

# Justin Allgaier, who is tied with Ricky Stenhouse atop the points standings (Allgaier is listed as the point leader based on tiebreakers) ... UPDATE: Team says that Wolf Pack Rentals will be on the car as it was last weekend at Nashville.

# Trevor Bayne, who is fifth in the points

# Josh Wise, who is 12th in the points

# Joe Nemechek, who is 14th in the points

This is a product of the Cup teams with Cup drivers dominating these races. No sponsor is going to shell out a couple million dollars to get on a car that gets little to no TV time.

Agreed.

Pretty sad state of affairs when the Daytona 500 champion doesn't have a sponsor.

How can NASCAR say there's not a problem?

Yeah more proof that the cup guys have killed the series. Why put money into a car that won't get shown on tv unless it wrecks or when it's going a lap down to a cup car.
