HAMPTON, Ga. -- NASCAR officials confirmed Sunday plans to have a Car of Tomorrow chassis tentatively in place for the 2009 Nationwide Series season.

During Saturday's Busch Series broadcast from Memphis, Rusty Wallace mentioned a Nationwide Series COT chassis that is on display at NASCAR's research and development center in Concord, N.C. NASCAR's director of cost and research, Brett Bodine, confirmed that a prototype has been built and is undergoing tests.

"We're working on an '09 [Nationwide] car," Bodine said. "[Having it ready for] '09 is tentative. It's not set in stone but we're working on it. We've informed some of the Busch owners and we've got a prototype at the R&D center."

At 110 inches, the wheelbase would match the current Nextel Cup chassis and includes all of the safety initiatives added in the COT design. However, Bodine said there will be significant differences between the two series, although the specifics have yet to be worked out.

"There will be a different body style and different aerodynamic package," Bodine said. "We're working on all that stuff. We're just not there yet, still working through all that process.

this sucks......i was hoping the Nationwide series would stay with the old car....this way less cup drivers would be driving in the nationwide cars.

oh well.

It still sounds like they are shooting for running Camaros, Mustangs, and Challengers. That would be a great move.

But if it’s the COT design with a mustang sticker then who cares? Is there any real difference between the COT cars other than the motor and manufacturer name?

I was hoping the same thing

It seems NASCAR wants Cup drivers sweeping Nationwide races.

That's why they've changed the schedule and the Nationwide stand-alone races are as close to the Cup races as they can get them.

It was hard as hell to run both series' when Harvick won in 2001.

But they've made it too easy for Carl and the guys running both Nationwide and Cup full-time now.

I want to see the lesser series become a stand alone series. If they put in the COT, it will be the same old, same old with the cuppers taking all the wins from the up and comers. Yeah, it'll be good for the likes of Jack Roush or Hendrick, but who the hell cares? Even though David Reutimann attempts each and every Cup race for MWR, it was great to see him win the last Busch race.

I don't think they should allow full time cup guys to drive it.
