A short track somewhere
And it seems clear that a linchpin of NBC's approach will be to maximize the emotion within the sport, even if that means trying to break drivers of some longstanding habits -- like immediately thanking all of their sponsors when they climb out of a car in Victory Lane.

"I think the sponsors are so critical to this sport. They need to be honored and respected. But your first answer shouldn't be thanking the sponsors," Flood said at the NASCAR Motorsports Marketing Forum that opened Champion's Week. "The first answer should be the emotion of the moment and the significance of the moment. … The sponsors can come at the back end of it, and I would never shortchange that. But I think the emotion has to come first."

Burton agreed, saying the sponsor logos on a driver's cap and firesuit should suffice.

"Do you really need to say it? I mean, most people can read," Burton said. "I've been in this sport forever, and when you push (sponsors) all the time, I think it takes away from the emotion of the sport. … That's why you wear a uniform with all the stuff on it. And to be honest, that's what I've done for 20 years. And I've never had a sponsor come to me and say, 'You need to mention our name more.' I don't remember ever having that conversation. And the reason why was, I was respected for answering the question."

Finally, people who have a clue covering NASCAR.

This looked good too:

NBC also hopes to take a cue from its football coverage. Before each Sunday night NFL game, the network's talent meets on Friday with the home team's head coach, coordinators and key players, and then does the same with the visiting team's on Saturday. Flood envisions similar, formalized meetings with key NASCAR teams each week.

"They need to have a schedule … where each weekend, six or seven race teams are going to get 10 minutes with our talent to talk about where they are, where they're going," he said. "We didn’t have that in '01 to '06. It was all (former analyst) Benny Parsons leaning against tires having conversations. And Benny was great about it, because he never left the garage. One of the greatest guys of all time. … I think in this day and age with drivers pulled in all different directions, we need to formalize that."

I really like what NBC wants to do with their coverage. They should be great for the sport and I can't wait until 2015.

I don't mind hearing the drivers talk , but to be honest , I don't need to have more of it . They don't have much to say . They never say outrageous stuff anymore . They are well schooled and have a press agent at their elbow . The days of hearing how they traded a cow for their first racecar are gone . If they can be honest and say what they really think , then I'm good with it , if not , just record it and play me the highlights of you can find one . Kevin Harvick and the Busch brothers excepted .

Funny How they are all trained except the above noted drivers, yet each week the above noted are the ones that they wanted to interview...........

(In Forrest Gumps tone) IT'S BECAUSE THEY SAY WHAT THEY THINK, !!!!!!!!!

They need to stop all this prerace stuff, noway do you need to talk about the race for an hour and half before it starts. If they say the race is going to start at 1:00 start the race at 1:00.

Sponsors are destroying the sport with their corporate bull****, but can you imagine the problems not thanking the sponsors would create? Chad Knaus would have to reprogram the after race subroutine for Jimmiebot48. That's some serious reprogramming.

Yes!!!!

The sponsor stuff is annoying but if some company were paying me that much money I'd mention them every other sentence. LOL

I don't mind the sponsors being thanked but this gets old.

(Driver gets out of car)

"I've got to thank (20 sponsors) and my crew and my team and my teammates and (car owner)..."

This has trickled down to the short tracks now. Every single driver who wants to move up think they have to be robots now. It's hard for fans to root for a guy on any level who has no emotion. There are a handful of drivers that will give me the exact same interview every single time - whether they won, finished third or got wrecked out. It's boring.

:XXROFL:

I'm not a huge fan of them thanking all the sponsors all the time either, but that's merely a symptom of a larger problem, the overall commercialization/corporatization of NASCAR, which I dislike as much as most of you probably do. As Bowtie Guy alluded to, the prerace stuff just gets ridiculous sometimes, especially the Daytona 500 with the whole Tribute to America prerace concert sponsored by so and so and presented by such and such. Everybody just has to get their name in there somewhere.

NBCSN's approach to this whole thing is somewhat encouraging, but ultimately there is little they'll be able to do about it, so I can't get too excited. NASCAR needs cash from big sponsors, and as long as that's the case, things aren't going to change significantly. It sucks, but it is what it is.

I like the way the NFL does it - FOX and CBS have their pregame shows from noon to 1 and then all of the games kickoff between 1:00~1:03. No bull****.

Ted, you can thank the fans that complain on twitter, and face book, and all the fans that felt the need to threaten to boycott a sponsor because they were offended by something their driver said. Most sponsors do not like negative publicity.

I really don't mind the sponsor plugs; they usually don't take up much time. I'm going to watch, no matter what. (Unless they hire Jimmy Spencer, then the audio will be muted and I'll be listening to MRN.com :) )

Yeah NBC sure seems to get it, but Rick Allen? Good grief... I do enjoy Rick's enthusiasm, It's his voice is why I wanted Bestwick.

Damn Tootin.

I agree with Burton on this. Kyle Petty used to say the same thing when he raced. I really think the marketing people with Hendrick and Roush are the ones that took this sponsor mentioning to an annoying level.

Like the NFL I like both the pre and post race shows. Also, jayski lists each and every week what the exact time of the green flag is. There's no need to watch a pre or post race if you don't like it.

How about a new piece called 'What'd ya have for breakfast ' , hosted by Connie Chung ? Drivers could bring in their chefs .:D

Turn it on right as the flag drops. Best thing to do.
Exactly, it's no secret when these things start. People that don't like all of the pre/post race stuff are happy and he rest of us that do like that kind of stuff are also happy. I have to wonder though..... Are the people that bitch about that sort of thing bitching about something that they don't watch or do they just tune it to it to bitch about it?

Son , it took me many , many years to get this bored by them .;)

I can't imagine anyone other than serious NASCAR fans frequent Jayski though. When NASCAR is trying to appeal to the general sports fan it probably doesn't help when they turn on the race and find out it doesn't start for another 20 minutes and then flip back to the NFL or MLB or whatever since they're all underway.

I don't know of anyone that bitches about the pre/post race shows other than the people that frequent here. I kinda figured that we are serious race fans.

I don't think it's a big deal, starting that late might just turn away some casual viewers though. I like TNT's and ESPN's pre-race shows but if cutting out the last 15 or so minutes can bring in more viewers it might be worth a shot.

The pre-race shows don't bother me. I know when the race starts and that's when I tune in. If I have a pre-race show on, it's just noise. The only pre-race show I like and pay attention to is TNT's Countdown to Green program.

Tune in at the posted race start time an you get about 20 minutes of pre-race ceremonies. I'd like to know what time the flag drops so I can coordinate my activities. I usually skip pre-race programming but I do try to catch the TNT feature stories.

The announcers just need to STFU and let us watch the goddam race. Camera guys need to pan out so we can see more than 2 cars at a time and stop with the stupid in-car shots of a driver steering. Save that in-car for replays.

If you want to watch the race without any commentary and see the entire track, you can buy a ticket and go to the race.

I usually work on Sundays so I'm generally lucky to even be able to see the last half of the races every week. On the rare occasions that I do get to tune in to a full broadcast, the prerace show itself doesn't typically bother me, but I'm not always compelled to watch it. It's mainly just all the Daytona 500 excess prerace hoopla that I can do without, and no, I don't sit there and watch it if I'm lucky enough to be home to see the whole race that day.

Just way too much pre race talk. In the late 90's they interviewed a few drivers and crew chiefs gave the standings and started the race. Thank God Fox got the message about Digger!

I don't watch the whole hour and half thing, but sometimes I miss the first couple of laps when I'm flipping back and forth because they keep BSing on and on.

Because going to 38 Cup events per year is realistic. Haha

Seriously though, less announcer chatter and better camera work featuring more than 1 or 2 cars at a time would be good. Extended aerial shots would be cool as well.

BEEN THERE DONE THAT. The greed is never ending with nascar and the tracks.
You wanna see greed go to a Walmart on Thanksgiving evening or black Friday morning and watch from a safe place, and I mean a SAFE place.

I like the pre- race stuff, As long as it ain't announcers babbling on and on. I like race day when they did some of the stories on teams or drivers you may never have heard otherwise.

not something that I care to do. yes that is the way of the world today.
