NC HillBilly

Cool, I have my own thread.

Thanks for the welcomes! You guys have a nice place here, I'm happy I found the place. :D

So, do most of you guys drive or work around racing? I'm just a fan myself..I always wanted to drive but I never had the money to get started. I tried to get into go-karts as a kid but we didn't have the money and Dad wouldn't have had the time. The older I get the more I wish I would have started driving years ago. I got to drive a friends kart once on a local dirt track, man was that fun. I was no where near able to run with the experienced drivers though. I think if I would have had some time I could have kept up though. :)

I hope to break in at some point. As much as I love the dirt tracks I think I'm more of a road course guy. I sometimes drive my street car way too fast down the country roads (always make sure it is really late..like 2am when I do that) and I get by on the sim-style video games. Maybe I'll have enough cash and spare time one of these days to get myself a kart. I doubt I'll ever be able to afford a big boys race car. :(

I'm also a bit of an idiot when it comes to working on cars...never took the time to learn. I can do little things but you'll never catch me working on an engine. Dad can tear those things apart and put them back together all day...I'm the computer guy and the one that drives everything too hard and tears it up. :D I was really into riding 4 wheelers at one point until I suffered multiple concussions over the course of a few years. Dad won't ride with me anymore at top speed, and I don't do it a lone anymore because I'm afraid of doing more damage to my noggin.

My really big concussion happened one day when I was 14, Dad and I were racing around a little course we made on our land. I was all over him and we both took a corner too fast, he had time to correct for the tree and I didn't.... My brother ended up tearing up my 4 wheeler about five years ago, he let his friend ride it and the guy didn't know how to work a clutch and ended up jumping off of it when it stalled and let it roll down a hill into a pond...that bastard. :(

Anyway I've always enjoyed driving, been doing it since I learned how to drive the tractor at five years old. Dad turned me lose in his car a few years later so I was shifting gears before most people were allowed to ride a motorcycle. ^^ Dad was also really big into motorcycles...I'm more of a four wheel kinda guy.

Anyone else around here from the great state of North Carolina? I'm born and raised, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon...unless I find a good job out of state. :)

Very happy to have you on board. Beverages are in the cooler, so pull up a chair and get comfy.

NC, I loved your Morgan story, also.

In the mid 70s my hubby and his brother did the work on a late-model dirt car for a man that started racing with AJ Foyt back in the 50s. My job in the pits was cleaning the mud out of the car and getting the tear-offs on the driver's helmet.

I have a question if you don't mind.

When I used to go to the dirt track every Saturday I noticed that they would put water (or is it oil?) on the used tires. Do they save those and run them later? Why do they put that stuff on them? Does it help the tire "keep" and prevent it from degrading or something?

I imagine teams that run on local tracks do anything to save some cash...that's why I always thought that they were probably re-using their tires. How many races can you run on one set of tires and do they use the same set for an entire night?

Also, what kind of transmission do they usually run in the late models? I hardly ever hear them shifting gears once they get up to speed. Matter of fact last time I watched a race at the local track I don't think I heard anyone downshifting for a corner.

Yes I am ignorant, bear with me. :D As I said I'm mostly a fan. ;)

I'm glad y'all enjoyed my story about Morgan. I love that guy and I'm happy I grew up when I did. I don't think the kids today will ever have the chance to meet a cup series driver in a local hot-dog joint. Times have changed...for the worse imo.

I type fast so I hope the walls of text I keep posting aren't bothering anyone. I swear they don't look that big when I type them. :D

Does it help the tire "keep" and prevent it from degrading or something? We would pour water on the tires to check for small leaks.

The cost kept rising -- that's one of the reasons we quit racing.

He ran a 4 speed, hand-built tranny -- Chevy parts and housing. It was a b**** to shift --- I couldn't do it. So I never got to run the Powder Puff races.

Haha, as many times as I've used the water trick to check for leaks on my own tires I never thought about them doing that at the track. Thanks for your responces...can't believe I didn't think of that simple answer on my own. :D

When I'm around you'll have plenty to read so no worries. Sorry to hear you guys couldn't continue racing due to the money. :( That seems to keep a lot of people from participating. :(
