Nelson Piquet Jr, the former F1 Renault driver has decided to make the jump to NASCAR.
Piquet is best known for, after being fired from Renault in August, he made public that under team orders he intentionally crashed at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix thus allowing his teammate Fernando Alonso to win the race. His testamony to FIA got team manager Flavio Briatore banned from F1 for life, and Renault suspended for 2 years.
Nelson told Brazilian TV that he will test a Truck for Red Horse Racing at Rockingham Speedway October 12th. He then hopes to race the truck series in 2010, Nationwide in 2011, and eventually move to Sprint Cup in 2012.
Honestly, this smells of desperation. He wasn't much of a driver anyways, but he would have never been able to land a ride in F1 again. No team would trust him after ratting out his former team. Especially when team orders are so common, any new team wouldn't want to take on the risk that they'd be outted.
I'm glad he's attempting something new, but he's going to have a big reality check soon. In F1 you can get away with winning races, hell even championships, without actually passing cars on the track. Most passing happens under pit stops.
Now he's coming to a series where it's not unheard of for tracks like Daytona to have 60+ lead changes among 20 drivers? Sorry, but drivers like Stewart and Montoya have made it work because they can drive anything with 4 wheels.
Good luck Piquet, but unless you have some talent hidden away you'll probably be looking for a ride somewhere else by this time next year. If you get a ride in NASCAR at all.
