Got the new puter and monitor today after a bunch of problems involving the delivery. Jeez, to think that it was probably made but a few miles from me and yet I would have had to travel maybe 40 miles to pick it up.

Anyway, the new puter is to replace the old machine I have down stairs where my modeling shop is, but I'm keeping the new 19 inch wide flat screen monitor up here and it's great. Gotta get the new driver installed though so I can get the resolution up to where it should be.

BTW, has anyone here used or is using Windows Vista? I'll have to get used to that new system.

Everyone I've heard from using Vista wishes they had waited til MS got the bugs out of it. Apparently consumers are finding a lot of incompatibility with other programs.

Well, I don't have any other system except Win 98 that I can load, but I needed something newer because I have a Dell printer that won't work with Win98. I won't be using this computer for anything delicate, so maybe I won't have much problems. As long as I can get the internet and some image programs so I can work with them, I'll be fine. The majority of my work will be done with this computer here...WinXP SP2 with all the upgrades. I'll give a report in about six weeks on Vista if I can remember.

im slowly getting used to vista on my gov't techers laptop (fixing it, oddly enough)

Im seriously considering buying one of those new Imac's. Anyone have one or any experience with a mac ?

There are power tools you can download that helps Vista look more like XP. There are a lot of compatibility issues with peripheals. I had to buy a new printer. I haven't tried my scanner but I'm guessing it won't work either.

As for the monitor, I kept trying to update the driver with no success. Fer cryin' out loud, the driver was on the disk, so what must be the problem. Finally today, I decided to reboot (I leave my computer on all the time) and viola, XP recognized the new monitor and now I've got the right resolution. Duh! If all else fails, reboot. I know this and have always told people that when you can't get something to work, try to reboot.

Reminder to self...always try your own advice first before complaining.... :)

Okay, got all installed. The monitor is upstairs on my main machine and is great. Now I've got the new computer installed down here in my basement where my shop is. I found a real problem right away and that is that my TV card from the old computer won't fit in this slim line jobby. :( I guess I'll have to buy a replacement, if I can find one that will fit. I sure don't want to be stuck down here without a TV of some sort.

I thought that might have been you on the men's underwear page in the latest JCPenny catalog. I hate to break it to you but thongs are not your best look... :D

:) As soon as I get things straightened out, I just might post a picture that my wife made of my dancing around a brass pole. :)

BP, you've got me laughing so hard my side hurts.

DeeDee, don't look!

Are you sure? :)

Here goes and it's sure to clear the board of everyone. BTW, this is my wife's handiwork...

Okay, it's your turn. :)

my guess is your old card is AGP (pre- 03 or 04 standard) and new computer is PCI-E (modern era).

No, the old computer is 6 inches wide and the new one is only 4. The card would work fine in my usual computer upstairs, but the slim line case down in the basement just won't work. I can get something that works externally anyway and would be a good upgrade, around $40 or so.

Oh is that a double dog dare? Your pic just looks so good I will just look stupid. :)

Okay Okay you win I will post it this evening. Ya'll are getting fair warning... :p

I just bought the new Imac, 20 inch. I love it. Good looking, small footprint (desk space is limited here) but a HUGE screen.

And a piece of cake to use.

I totally recommend it.

Your 20 inch iMac, depending on the PCU speed...1,200 to 1,500 dollars.

My Dell with 19 inch widescreen flat panel monitor...399 dollars.

iMacs are said to be the best, and I can't argue with that but I've never used one, but there is one huge difference and that is the price. All of my IBM clones have lasted as long as any Macs from the same era and I've saved a bundle of money. AND, it seems that many Mac users look down their noses at IBM clone users. So, make sure your nose hair is cut. :D

But be fair and compare Apples to Oranges here, Mini $600 + $150 monitor. 400 vs 750.

Plus deduct what you spend on Virus protection... :)

It's totally worth it FOR ME. I know Macs aren't for everyone.

And having just shaved my nose I can reply: ... a Ugo and a BMW both have engines, four wheels and can take you to the grocery store.

...sorry couldn't help it. :)

one will get you there comfortably...

the other one will have you stopping for 3 gallons of water and a butt cast on the way to the store

:D

And i'm working with my computer right now. Hopefully i can get my bank statement, check the intrest from my computer fund, then buy all the parts and stuff and pay my mom back from the fund (and have the leftover intrest sitting around as free money).

Sorry but that Mini Imac is nothing like my new Dell. Just because it's a slim line design doesn't mean that it's that small. The diminsions are the same as a regular PC only about an inch or two thinner. We aren't talking the same thing as a Mini iMac here.

Oh, and I pay absolutely nothing for virus protection. There are several sites that offer free protection and are rated as good as any that you purchase. I use AVG and have for many years now.

But I will not say anything bad about the iMacs as I do know they are good if not great. My problem with them is that Steve Jobs chose to go with a smaller distribution of his products at a high price. They are way over priced, but those who love his products are willing to pay for them.

Think about his newest product, the iPhone. In less than 60 days of introduction, he lowered the price by nearly 30% and then appologized to those who bought the thing for the higher price.

Again, I have nothing against Apple products, but I choose to spend less money and I'm satisfied with what I have. :)

And you bought the Apple, but I didn't buy an orange.

I wasn't looking at size/design, only picking the cheapest Dell computer option and the cheapest Apple computer option to compare prices. Comparing a $400 Dell to an Imac overlooks the cheaper options....

Otherwise I could say the IMac is cheaper than the Dell XPS 720 H2C Edition (5,000 smackers!!). ((look that computer up...I'd take one of those! Liquid cooled! crazy.))

vanzetti, the reason I got this computer so cheap is because it was a business order and didn't have any software other than Windows Vista and some Dell crap that I'll probably delete anyway. It was on sale and I got it quickly as the next week, the same computer for the same price only included a 17 inch monitor. If this same computer was purchase for home use, it would have cost $699 and again with only a 17 inch monitor.

We can compare computers to cars in this instance. I drive a 2004 Dodge Stratus R/T that I love and it's cost was reasonable for me. However, I would love to have a Maybach and I know I would love it, but I couldn't even afford the insurance for that car. But since I've never even seen one of those cars (we do have one here in Winston Salem) let alone ride in one, I don't know what I'm missing and really don't care. And I know what the feeling is like because before I bought the Stratus, my wife insisted on us test driving a Chrysler 300. I didn't want to because I already knew that I liked that car, but she insisted. So we did and now I know what I'm missing. :)

While I would probably love the iMac, I just don't know because the only experience I've had with an Apple computer was one of their very early models in which I learned how to use and that was useless for me as I ended up buying an IBM clone.

BTW, I love this conversation, but like Lappy, I'm waiting for DeeDee's picture that she promised. :D :growl: :D

Checked it out and all I can say is WOW! That reminds me of a guy I used to talk computers with some four or five years ago. He was a computer hack and as such, he was up on all the goodies. He would even over clock his computer to make it faster, something that I don't even think matters these days. Anyway, he showed me a computer that was similar to that Dell one in that it had it's own air conditioner, or shall I say freezer.

I used to get all excited with new hardware etc, but today, I don't need much more than a Celeron, though I don't have one. I'm not a gamer so that makes it much easier for me to choose a computer/processor. I deal with 2D graphics and some photos and other than a few Word documents, that's about all. I'm getting too old for any of that new stuff now. :einstein:

Actually barelypure, I have one very similiar to you avatar....
