New Virus

Ahh, another new virus to worry about. This time it's the Beagle virus and it's not nearly as adorable as the cute little breed of dog it's named for.

Sure, it seems welcoming enough. In fact, the subject line is almost beagle-like in its friendliness - just one word - "Hi". The body of the e-mail looks like this:

Test =)

(Imagine lots of random characters here)

Since people can't resist opening attachments from people they don't know - especially something with a provocative word like "test" thrown in - this one is really spreading fast.

It includes an "exe" attachment that, when run, causes the virus to send itself to every address it can find on your computer. As an added bonus, it opens your computer up for outside attacks. After all, if you're going to write a virus, might as well make the infected computers easy to hack, right?

Oh, and it also spoofs the sender address. Hence, if it says it comes from [email protected], it probably doesn't. (That lying virus!) So, if an infected e-mail lands in your inbox, resist the urge to send a nasty letter to the "sender". They probably aren't infected and you're just gonna scare them.

At any rate, this thing is supposed to stop after Jan 28, 2004. However, it's probably still a good idea to be sure your virus definitions are up to date. If you need AV software, now's a good time to get it. We currently have Norton 2004 in stock at:

The main thing here is, as always, don't open attachments you are not expecting - even if they're from someone you know. OK, now go back and read that sentence again. If you've ever been infected with a virus, you may even want to read it a third time ;-)

Don't open unexpected attachments and 99% of your virus worries are gone. It's really that easy.
