NASCAR the Game: Inside Line developer Eutechnyx is also making the first licensed NASCAR iOS title - NASCAR: Redline. However, the game isn't your typical racing game on the platform.

Rather than create an iOS version of Inside Line, however, Eutechnyx has decided to go in a slightly different direction. Redline is more like being a crew chief than it is a driver. Although you play through certain moments on the track such as avoiding wrecks and making crucial passes, it mainly focuses on the strategy behind winning races from the shop all the way to the track.

You start your career as part of nascent organization, so you have to race your way up the ladder before you start leveling up, get better sponsors, and can fully upgrade your car. Car upgrades encompass the usual categories of your engine, transmission, aero, brakes, and suspension. Within these are other sub-categories as well. The interesting part of the upgrade system is that your car only has so much capacity for them, so you have to configure your car with upgrades depending on what kind of track you race on.

After you buy an upgrade, the amount of real-life time it takes to install the part varies, and the game allows you to speed up the process with E-Bucks. These can be earned or bought with real-life money. E-Bucks can also be used to restock your limited initial supply of rewinds, which naturally let you re-do events.

During the race you can manage how aggressive or conservative you want to be on your fuel, driving, and tires. How you choose to approach these influences your need to pit, which you can do at any time. Of course, your pit strategy (including choosing how many tires you want and how much fuel) is key to giving you a chance at winning, so you have to be smart about every decision.

Playing the game, I started to understand how nerve wracking it is to be a crew chief; sitting on top of the battle wagon largely helpless to win the race by yourself - save for those handful of crucial decisions that most of the time need to be made entirely on the fly. Decisions in the game are all on a timer, but Redline's HUD is good enough that it doesn't get in the way.

While strategy is largely the focus, it presents moments in the race where you have to direct the ontrack action. These consist of managing your gas and brake to hit designated onscreen MPH markers related to the event (see below), whether that's qualifying, starting the race, or missing a wreck. Unfortunately, managing your gas/brake is the only hands-on gameplay in the title, and Redline doesn't present any gameplay around crucial situations like pit stops, hitting pit row speed, or restarts.

Redline's gameplay might be limited, but it also presents another side of racing that is both welcome and in tune with NASCAR itself. It's just a different kind of adrenaline.

Eutechnyx? I'll pass. This is the company that learned all they know about NASCAR from Wikipedia. They've now got two whole years under their belt. Color me skeptical.
I shore as hail aint buyin nothin I caint even pronunce, how ya say eutechnyx to ast fer it at the sto.

If they can ever implement that concept into the console games I'd be interested in it. I'm hoping someone other than Eutechnyx gets the license soon though. NTG: 2011 and NTG: IL are pretty bad.

Understatement

You're wrong about that. Most of their North Carolina division is made up of former Papyrus employees who made NASCAR games for years in addition to IndyCar and F1 games.

That sounds super fun. Too bad my computers a piece of chit that cant process games. Hopefully they make it fore the XBOX as well...

Yeah, you're right. I was probably wrong when I said that they learned all that they knew from Wikipedia. I don't think they knew anything at all. This was one of the worst releases of a NASCAR game ever. It was a beta release at best. The release of the game was delayed because the company was not able to produce a playable version of the game in time for the start of the 2011 season. After it's release it became apparent the the game was plagued with a laundry list of bugs. It was so bad on it's initial release that it was virtually unplayable. The promised online play was not even close to completion. Even playing the game in single user mode was a nightmare. It was a huge disappointment for those of us expecting to finally getting a decent NASCAR sim once again.

As far as Papyrus goes. They weren't involved in this game when it was released in 2011. They were the team that went on to develop iRacing after Papyrus shut down in 2004. I owned every NASCAR product that Papyrus put out and they were far superior to anything that Eutechnyx has tried to produce under the NASCAR title. That's true for any NASCAR title developed after the demise of the Papyrus name. I don't bother following Eutechnyx anymore and they most certainly may have picked up a member from Papyrus and placed them in Charlotte. IMO that would have been simply done as a marketing ploy to make the end user think that the game is being developed in the heart of the NASCAR community so it's got to be good, right? If they've truely made the move to get some of the old Papyrus staff then they've made a move in the right direction.

First impressions mean a lot. Eutechnyx left many of us disappointed. Unless I could see some positive reviews on one of their NASCAR titles I wouldn't waste my time.

Have you even played NTG? It's dreadful. I can travel at half speed around Daytona & still grab the pole. The rate at which you pass cars in the draft is unrealistic as it gets. Drop to the back & pass half the pack on one straightaway... stupid. Doesn't matter what track either. Anything related to NASCAR made by this company I'd pass.

I hate mobile games lol

Such is the case for me too. Although I got caught in the Candy Crush craze.

Also Temple Run. :D

I wouldn't touch this or any NASCAR related games with someone else's money.

I get my racing fix with Gran Turismo 5. Closest game to a SIM out there. Cant wait for the 6th installment later this year.

I actually like NASCAR 2012 Inside Line, I bought it for PS3. I go to red flags only, then me and my friends battle it out and cause crazy big wrecks. It's ridiculous, but fun seeing 30 car pile ups and trying to navigate through them. It's not as easy when you turn up the difficulty of the AI. I just got so sick of only Daytona and Indy in GT5.

The online is kind of broken, I'm not sure if they fixed it but you used to not be able to pick the track it was just random race basically. Either way it's not a simulation, but it does look great as far as the cars and tracks go.

The last NASCAR title I had was NASCAR 08 and it was terrible IMO. With the 2012 Inside Line it was way more fun to just play split screen and cause carnage. Of course, it always froze on the yellows so I just went to red flags only and have had lots of fun since.

Sounds pretty cool. I like the concept. But Eutechnix .. I cant help but feel like there will be a lot of bugs to work out. I'll wait a few years lol.
