Basically they're looking at using a group qualifying format similar to what they've done on the road courses this year for all tracks except Daytona and Talladega where they will have a 60 minute drafting session.

I like the idea.. but not for the Plate tracks. You give these guys a 60 minute drafting session to qualify for the race and you're going to have a lot of guys starting from the rear in back up cars imo.

No surprise. They've been talking about this all year. They're considering all sorts of stuff from whether the lineup should be based on single-lap times or averages over several laps to group qualifying to elimination formats (see: F1 qualifying), etc.

Now the 60-minute drafting session is kinda silly.

I like it. The short tracks have been doing 2 and 3 at a time qualifying sessions for several years. It would certainly make qualifying more interesting.

Just do heat races. the best 20-25 get in the field. Qualifying now is boring but I don't think three at a time makes it any better.

They should def. try heat races at the short tracks, to give people that short track racing experience.

nascar spokesman Kerry Tharp..."We just talked about some ideas that would make things more interesting."

Here are some other changes to qualifying nascar is considering to "make things more interesting"....

1. Make the drivers run a foot race on an obstacle course.
2. Fan vote via twitter.
3. Have a monkey throw darts at a list of drivers entered for the race.
4. Make the drivers run a foot race around the track.
5. Driver karaoke contests.
6. Dodge ball eliminations with a track-side drawing to pick a fan to throw the ball. Last driver standing gets the poll.
7. Drivers 'mother may I' eliminations.
8. Hotdog eating contest... Martinsville only
9. Driver/crew chief potato sack race around the track.
10. Video game qualifying. Drivers have to run qualifying laps of their own car on a giant screen TV in a video game.

Every race

1. Carl Edwards
2. Dale jr
3. Kyle Busch (can relate to the monkey)
4. Carl Edwards
5. Danica Patrick
6. David Reagan (has no haters)
7. Mark Martin (old enough to know every cliche in the book)
8. TONY STEWART
9. Clint Bowyer (he's used to playing with sacks right?)
10. Newman (can't get a pole in real life anymore)

It's qualifying, it's as exciting as qualifying can be. Why does NASCAR feel they need to manufacture "excitement" in every aspect. The product use to speak for itself. What, do we need to wreck a bunch of cars in qualifying and in the race now???

I would rather see just 30 minutes of practice before the standard qualifying. Do it all the same day and right before the race. THAT could be exciting.

how much do trust nascar to be on the up and up? just one more thing they are in charge of without checks and balances to have more drama.

I liked when they done the qualifying by practice times.
Me too. You always knew the next guy out was faster and could take the pole. Now you can end up with nothing happening for the last 10 guys and personally when that happens (no fast drivers late) I change the channel.

It doesn't matter if you qualify one car at a time or go in groups. The Same guys will always start up front.

Qualifying up front in F-1 is all important and a lot of effort goes in to getting the pole. Qualifying in Nascar really doesnt mean much IMO, there are to many chances to fix a bad starting position at most tracks. The process will remain somewhat boring no matter what they do to spice it up

It seems to me that having multiple cars qualifying on an oval might lead to the temptation to affect another car's qualifying attempt. Team orders to draft with each other, Busch vs. Harvick, slow car = a moving chicane.
