Haas-CNC Racing gives Borland new role

Matt Borland has been named the new competition director for Haas-CNC Racing.
Borland, who joined Penske Racing as a simulation engineer in 1999, led Ryan Newman to 12 wins, 54 top fives and 83 top 10s and 37 pole positions in 188 starts before leaving the No. 12 car at the end of last season to join Michael Waltrip Racing as crew chief for the No. 44 Toyota Camry and driver Dale Jarrett. Borland resigned from MWR last month.
"We interviewed a lot of different people, but he's an awesome fit for what we're trying to do," said Joe Custer, Haas-CNC Racing general manager. "His credentials speak for themselves. We're definitely looking at moving more toward an engineering-based organization. Everything we're doing involves technology whether it's the seven-post shaker rig or the wind tunnel. It's our goal to improve."
HCR has already shown improvement over last season. Veteran driver Jeff Green is 23rd in the points — up two positions from 2006 — and has posted two top 10s. Haas Cup newcomer Johnny Sauter has scored one top 10, but finished second in the Nextel Open on Saturday and finished a respectable sixth in the Nextel Challenge.
