The price of smokes is about to go through the roof here in North Carolina. Am I so glad that I don't smoke anymore.

The new governor of the state is proposing a $1.00 tax per pack of smokes along with the new $.62 federal tax per pack, making the state of NC the 25th highest state for a price of a pack of smokes, up from 45th. Kind of a shock coming from a huge tobacco state. The governor and her gang feel that taxing the smokers of the state will continue and add nearly a half billion dollars to the state coffers. It's said that a price of smokes will now average about $5.50 a pack! Again, man I'm glad that I quit. But one has to wonder just how high will smokers be willing to pay for their habit, one that many would love to beat, before they are forced to stop. Like many years ago when the feds decided that if they taxed those who buy luxury yachts, they can rake in the cash. The never thought that the rich would stop buying those boats and an unintentional result of that tax was many hard working middle class people were out of a job, making those boats.

People, if the government gets used to the money made from taxing smokers, and those smokers quit, they will find someone else to tax to get that money.

quit buying locally about 10 years ago. when the feds shut down buying from switzerland i switched to buying from indian reservations. given a choice at same price i'd still buy native's or seneca's.

April 1st cigarettes here are going up $6 a carton. I sure am glad I quit smoking be 3 years last of July or first August.

I just don't understand these politicos. Suely they know that they can tax people into quiting or getting bootlegged smokes. The number of people who smoke these days is way down from what it was twenty/thirty years ago and though there are new smokers every day, more and more quit without the thought of paying more taxes. I guess they will continue to go after the "sin taxes" until the people begin to revolt.

I just feel they are very hypicritical about the whole thing. They want people to stop smoking, but yet they want the taxes so they want people to continue. Once that revenue ceases to be enough, then they'll come after my beer, wine and spirits. Making your own cigarettes isn't all that easy, but making your own beer and wine is relatively simple and once you you have built up your stock, you just continue brewing.

The cost of everything is going up and higher taxes are inevitable. It's the American way.
The Govt. is going to get their money no matter what.
I quit smoking 15 years ago. It wouldn't bother me in the least if they got rid of those stinky things altogether...

Have any of you watched the advertisement for electric cigarettes? I hadn't heard about them until a friend sent me the address to them. She's thinking about trying them.

That's nothing.....here in Ma. the price of a pack of name brand cigs. averages about $7.00.

Each and every time they raise the tax on cigarettes here there's a temporary spike in tax revenue and within a year it's back to the level it was. People quit for not only health reasons but it's just too damm expensive. 7 bucks a day x 30 days=$210 a month or more. Raising the tax on beer, wine and spirits too.
My city has been playing with the traffic signals, the time of a yellow light before changing to red has been reduced. It was done for safety reasons, the 40% increase in traffic tickets for running a red is just coinky dink they say. :sarcasm:
Word of warning to those traveling RT 95 through RI, state po-po are on a tear writing speeding tickets, again not for revenue, it's for your own safety.:D

with the need for new revenue sources legalizing pot looks awfully attractive. i wouldn't be surprised if it's legal (and taxed) within 10 years. give new life to tobacco companies too. they already have the fields to grow, marketing and distribution set up.

Said that back in the late 60's early 70's. Never gonna happen.
FWIW, never saw a pot head get in a bar fight or wrap his car around a tree killing someone. Tough to do when yer going 7 mph. DAMHIKT

I about got hit by someone smoking pot. They was passing a joint around doing about 35. I went to pass and they kept coming in my lane. I know they were not drinking, i went to school with the guy driving i said something to him about this and he was like "I was so high"

If it comes up to vote i will vote no for pot. Its worse the what people think. Plus, i dont want to grow boobs....

Making cigarettes isn't hard. I bought a hand roller for $10 for the wife to see if she was OK with home mades. She prefers them over what you buy. I've since bought an electric roller. You just load the tobacco into the machine, attach a cigarette tube (less than $2 bucks for a carton of tubes) and push a button. Theoretically I could get cured tobacco from a farmer and run it thru the food processor to grind up the leaves cutting out the middle man.
