In the very early days of NASCAR, at the first race ever held at Darlington, Johnny Mantz won that 500 mile race driving a strictly stock, flathead six cylinder Plymouth tudor sedan.
Mantz was not the fastest car on the track, but as Mantz drove the entire rce on the bottom of the track by the apron, competitors cars were destroying tires due to the abrasive track surface.
Mantz ended up the winner of the first Southern 500 by nine laps.
