New U.S.N Railgun Fires Projectiles At Mach 7 Speec

cool. I had heard they were working on something. Will be good for space exploration also good for kicking daesh's ass

For some reason basing the attack capabilities of a naval vessel on these electronic guns doesn't sound like the best idea to me. The tech itself sounds impressive, but they've had major durability issues and it only fires 40 pound metal slugs. That's barely b.b.'s compared to the 2,700 pound explosive shells these old "real" naval guns fire.

Try doing all of that with old tech. Plus I dont think those shells go mach 7

Those old battle ships are so much more intimidating too. Innacurate as all hell, meant to rip apart an entire city from the horizon, guns sticking out all over the damn thing, loud as f*ck... put a few of those off any coast & the enemy will start having second thoughts.

Yep. And an Iowa class ship is the only ship design the Navy has that can handle any weapons platform. Pure firepower, guided missiles, even nuke shells, with the refits they've had they're an all-in-one platform for raining destruction on the enemy. And compared to modern ships they're nearly invincible; the attack that nearly destroyed the Cole would have only scorched the paint on an Iowa.

I guess what they need to do is bring an Iowa out of retirement and find a way to replace a couple 5-inch turrets with the new railguns, and there you go: perfect mixture of conventional firepower and the latest tech.
