International Speedway Corp., owned by the France family and NASCAR's "sister" business, said yesterday that it has agreed to buy 676 acres on Staten Island for a long-sought NASCAR track in the New York City area.

ISC said it has signed contracts to buy two adjacent tracts near the Goethals Bridge, which connects the New York City borough to New Jersey, and will build an 80,000-seat, 3/4-mile raceway by about 2009.
 
at least its a 3/4 mile and not another 1 1/2 mile superspeedway. :bounce: :bounce:
 
I was really in stitches listening to Robin Millers take on this subject last night on Wind Tunnel. :XXROFL:

Yay for another short track. Good question 17-fan. Parking should be fun.
 
Boooooo, to the Short-track Idea....MORE SPEEDWAYS!!! Short-tracks are BOOOOORING! If I wanna see bang up action, I'll go to the local track to the Demo-Derby!
 
I glad it is a short track and not a RP track. Don't get me wrong. I like RP racing but like short track better. :lol:
 
If they do decide to go through with this, I hope they don't go and stop going to watkins glen
 
After this last race...I would be fine if they took NH.

it would be easist and closest!!!... :D

It seems to be that is what Nascar is gearing up to do with possibly the other Martinsville date moving to KC or a new track in the Seattle area.
 
If they were going to take both dates from Martinsville they sure are spending a lot of money to improve and expand the track.

At least with the NY track you can probably ride the subway and not have to worry about parking.

There is no subway service on Staten Island though...just the other four boroughs.
 
i figured it would be a .75 mile track...with the lack of land space in nyc and the fact that irl can race at richmond, it wouldn't have made sense to build anything smaller or bigger than .75...plus isc kind of alluded that the northwest area track would likely be around 3/4 mile...

but i think a road course, where they can race in the rain, would be a better choice for the northwest...however, i think they might go with some sort of rockingham/darlington 1.25 mile hybrid...just a hunch.

i don't think martinsville will lose a date to ny...i think one of pocono's saving graces has been it's closeness to nyc, and with a track IN the city (if it actually happens), pocono's chances of surviving seem smaller.

also...there's no reason it should take 4+ years to pour 3/4 mile worth of concrete and some stands...i think the track project will include some new transportation option for the island, and will probably be part of some grand scheme...i think brian has some more major changes in store, something along the lines of having multiple divisions of the cup series and a larger international presence by 2009. the end result, in his mind, would probably call for a large number of new tracks along with an increased emphasis on historic tracks that look to be in jeopardy right now.

but i think that staton island will probably be like ontario, ca...a highly advanced track with all of the finest amenities that will simply be unable to turn a profit. my negativity towards brian is not just based on his short stint as cup ceo, but goes back to him ruining the winston west...i just don't feel confident that he will be able to succeed in his ambitions for forcing racing to become even bigger faster than it should.
 
WOO HOO,another short track,They've already said it will host 2 Cup events per year also.I hope it has quite a bit of banking,less than Bristol,say around 26+ degree banking in turns?
Hope that Martinsville and Pocono keep both of Their respective dates though.
Wouldn't mind seeing NHIS lose 1 date,but not both dates.
