The Camaro ZL1's 6.2-liter supercharged V8, which shares its basic spec sheet with the Cadillac CTS-V and Chevy Corvette ZR1, puts out 580 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 556 pound-feet of torque at 4,200 rpm. The official 0-60 time is 3.9 seconds and the quarter mile is dispatched in 12 seconds flat. Top speed is listed as 184 miles per hour, thanks in part to an aero package that includes a new front fascia, a carbon fiber hood with functional air extractor vents and an undertray with NACA ducts for cooling.

Six hundred and fifty horsepower. Six hundred pound-feet of torque. Over 200 miles per hour. With specs like these, you don't need long-form introductions. This is the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, and all we can say is, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 has officially been put on notice.

Sounds like it should take one the ZR1, not the Camaro.

Um, What's the 0-60 times? Quarter Mile time?

Nobody cares if it can do 200. 99% of guys who buy one will cite that stat without ever attaining it.

the shelby

I keep looking for a 0-60 time. All the FORD guys want to do is brag about how it can hit 200MPH.

What track is this possible at? And even if it is possible, why brag about it if you are gunning for the ZL1?

Why not post the 1/4 mile and 0-60 times?

Something smells fishy here.

Like....... They revised the final drive ratio and now they can't get the MPG numbers they want. Lest the owner pay a gas guzzler tax.

Come to think now, maybe that's why the bowtie engineers didn't take it that far. Or they didn't want to beat the car they have that's actually engineered to go that fast! HA!

Ford needs a car that is a sports car. NOT A PONY CAR WITH SUPERCAR ENGINEERING.

LOL

Good article.

After reading that one, and several others about these two cars I deduce this:

Chevy wanted to build a car that was a good track car, and good at the drag strip.

Ford wanted to go 200 MPH.

They both hit their target.

If you look at the ZL-1's performance numbers, 12 flat quarter mile and 3.9 0-60 times in 4,120 lb street trim it kind of makes you wonder about that "Stated" 580 HP?
The Corvette has always been the Flagship of Chevrolet's Perfomance line up and always will be, they wont let it be shown up by an everymans car like the lil Camaro ZL-1.

HP = Weight/(ET/5.825)3.

Comments on other sites

The consensus seems to be among others on other sites, is that the FORD should dominate, track or drag.

Good info from autoblog users:

A. Car & Driver just tested the ZL1 and the figures are on par with the current GT500. 0-60 in 4.1s (same as Shelby), 0-100mph in 8.9s (9.1s for the Shelby), 1/4mi. in 12.3s (12.4s GT500).

B. Gm has some legitimate concerns about the upcoming 2013 GT 500 Mustang which when dynoed by Ford [ latest Hot Rod magazine article ] made 670HP @ 7000rpm and 600tq. The ZL1 [ 580HP ] was recently tested against the Boss 302 [ 444HP ] and in the 0-60mph the numbers were only 1 tenth apart and in the 1/4 mile the Camaro ran a 12.1et against the Boss 302's 12.4et. That's only a 3 tenths margin of victory and the 2013 GT 500 is making over 200 more HP than the Boss 302. You don't have to be a NASA engineer to figure out that a 200HP advantage is good for a lot more than 3 tenths in the 1320. The GT 500 is also 300lbs lighter than the ZL1 and that alone is good for a 2-3 tenths in the 1/4 mile. When you take all of the numbers that are provided and there are many, the 2013 GT 500 should be good for 11.50-11.60 et's and these numbers should be consistant.

Right on. I know guys from Detroit that swear some engines put out much more than the maker says they do. I think it's for lower insurance costs.

Good info, but we need to know what gearing each is using. Ford seems to be going for the top end numbers, because the short run numbers seem weak for those specs.

The Ford is said to hit 60 in 1st gear.

The Podcast from AUTOBLOG is excellent. One of the guys has driven both.

Can you say GT?

It's a Ford only by nameplate. The build the entire car at a custom Saleen shop. Then only does a UAW worker touch it. Only to drop the drive train in.

Those things are known for weak upper A-arms, and bad rear crank seals.

Good thing they only cost $150,000.

The Ford Fusion is built ENTIRELY in Mexico!

At least the Saleen shop is in the USofA...

But yeah, it is a crappy car by all reports - and it's no longer being produced, from what I understand.

Ford GT...don't care where it's built, by whom or anything. This is a car that I've slobbered over for years. Even the newer version.

Corvette ZR1 built in Kentucky will wax a GT and leave 50k jingling in your pocket :D

No it's not a ZR1 it's my girlfreinds new Grand Sport 100 Anniversery Edtion. It was her anniversery present.

NASCAR needs to clue in off the ADRL and go back to it's roots of a "stock car" class. Even if it's only a 50 lap event. It would be something.

Would reports of the upper A-ARMS folding under the pressure of a high speed corner change your mind?

Or how about the Crank seals not being up to snuff. Enough so that they had to put a "speedi sleeve" on several of them after bought and delivered.

If I had spent 180k on that car, and was told a speedi sleeve would fix the problem, I would probably murder the rep.

Girlfriend.... anniversary? Wow.

Geez, wonder what he got his wife!:D

OUR 30th Anniversery we've been together since 1981 and have never seen the need of a worthless certificate, we're both Very Happy and have never gone to bed angry at each other.

Never been anyone else during that time.
