I was watching Sports Center on ESPN, and I read the nascar news at the bottom and I think It said that Nextel has been chosen as the sponsor for next year.

According to one unconfirmed report, the financial pact would include a $30 million a year payment to NASCAR for the series title and a $50 million a year ad buy on television.(Winston Salem Journal), past news on my NASCAR Sponsor page.(6-16-2003)

Nextel Cup?

Thats going to take some getting used to.
It will always be Winston Cup to me.

Its sure will! Some new fans might not even realize that WInston Cup is named after the cigiret company. All I have know it as is WInston CUp Now its going to be Nextel Cup!
Evem the NASCAR WInston CUp scene will have to change names! Do you think they will rename it NASCAR Nextel Cup Scene or just drop the Nextel cup and be NASCAR Scene, since it covers the BGn and trucks as well? Many other things will be effected by the change as well. IMO I think Nextel CUp better than the Visa Cup! Visa cup sounds to much like a golf tournment!

The switch won't be that big, it's only a name. Lowes Motor Speedway is still the same old Charlotte.

Nextel Cup?

The name may not contain the word "cup" [/b][/quote]
You very well may be correct. Just to distance themselves from Winston they may end up calling it the NEXTEL racing series. Busch Grand National racing is known as the Busch series so I could see them eliminating the term "Cup."

This sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Nextel is a whole lot more respected in the general population than Winston or RJR will ever be.

Would that stop NEXTEL from merging with another company, like in 6 years, and changing there name? You see this very often with cell phone companies. I know NEXTEL also has the 2 way radio feature. I don't think any other company does that yet.

I'm sure a name change would be covered in the contract negotiations.
