Statement regarding the Super Bowl halftime show

Statement by NFL Executive Vice President Joe Browne regarding the Super Bowl halftime show:

"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced Halftime show. They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the show. It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."

It was said on my local news that janet had a shocked look on her face, but it is not known if it was intensional or not.

CBS apologized on Sunday for an unexpectedly R-rated end to its Super Bowl halftime show, when singer Justin Timberlake (search) tore off part of Janet Jackson's (search) top, exposing her breast.

"CBS deeply regrets the incident," spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade said after the network received several calls about the show.

The two singers were performing a flirtatious duet to end the halftime show, and at the song's finish, Timberlake reached across Jackson's leather gladiator outfit and pulled off the covering to her right breast.

The network quickly cut away from the shot, and did not mention the incident on the air.

Timberlake said he did not intend to expose Jackson's breast.

"I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl," Timberlake said in a statement. "It was not intentional and is regrettable."

Wade said CBS officials attended rehearsals of the halftime show all week, "and there was no indication any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS' broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended."

The Super Bowl (search) halftime show, which also featured P. Diddy (search), Nelly and Kid Rock, was produced by MTV, CBS' corporate cousin in Viacom.

"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show," Joe Browne, NFL executive vice president, said. "They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show.

"It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."

MTV issued a contrite statement, saying the incident was "unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional."

Janet Jackson's Bare Breast Sparks FCC Probe

Updated 12:39 PM ET February 2, 2004

By Jeremy Pelofsky

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An outraged Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell on Monday ordered an investigation into the broadcast of the Super Bowl's halftime entertainment show, during which singer Janet Jackson's right breast was exposed.

During the break in the National Football League's championship game, pop singer Justin Timberlake reached for Jackson as they sang a duet and tore open part of her black leather bustier.

"That celebration was tainted by a classless, crass and deplorable stunt," Powell said in a statement. "Our nation's children, parents and citizens deserve better."

Television networks are already on the defensive, with the FCC taking a more aggressive stand against indecency over the airwaves and Congress threatening to sharply raise the fines for such incidents.

Viacom Inc.'s CBS television network, which aired the show, and MTV, which produced the halftime bonanza, apologized for what they described as an unscripted moment.

A spokesman for CBS had no immediate comment on the probe and a Viacom spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

"We attended all rehearsals throughout the week and there was no indication that any such thing would happen," CBS said. "The moment did not conform to CBS broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended."

Powell promised a "thorough and swift" investigation by the agency's enforcement division. Scores of complaints were coming in to the FCC about Jackson and other portions of the entertainment segment of the game.

When the FCC was bombarded with complaints about the fashion show by lingerie retailer Victoria's Secret that aired on Walt Disney Co.'s ABC broadcast network in 2001, the agency declined to take action because the material was not "so graphic or explicit as to be patently offensive."

CBS picked up the lingerie show after ABC reportedly declined to air the fashion show the following year. As part of a tougher stance against indecency at times when children are likely to be watching, the FCC is considering action against General Electric Co.'s NBC television network for an incident in which U2 rocker Bono said "f---ing brilliant" when accepting an award on a live broadcast.

Federal indecency rules bar the broadcast of obscene material and limit the airing of indecent material that contains sexual or excretory references in a patently offensive manner to late night hours when children are less likely to be watching.

I guess she's tired of her brother gettin all the headlines

Next year's half time show......marching bands and balloons.

I thought the show was a little too on the edge at best.
I'll admit that I am older, but I couldn't understand a word of the lyrics, if there were any. Most of the dancers with Janet seemed to be sharing clothing. If you put three of them together, you might be able to make one outfit. All in all, I thought it was dreadful.

This is just my opinion, your milage may vary.

NW, I'm right there with you. I don't like these "new" shows. To me, they are just not entertainment. I did not appreciate watching people cavort in their underwear.

Call me old-fashioned, but when did decency fall out of favor?

I didn't get to see the show. I did see it on cnn and fox news Don't look it was an accident to me.

I guess decency has been replaced by what will sell tickets or cd's. What ever happened to talent. IMHO, cavorting around half dressed, mouthing words no one understands, is not entertainment. I hope they get a half time show worth viewing for next year.

By the way, why was Janet wearing Micheal's hand-me-down wardrobe?

Keep the rap, clean it up though, for example Janet Jackson and Nelly's lyrics but please for heavens sakes get that shmuck Justin Timberlake out of there !

Thats public exhibition, should I say lewdness? Yep, the FCC will be on MTV or whoever's cornchutes like bees on honey.

I think the NFL will go country next year, they said MTV will never do a halftime show again.

I never watch the half time shows because they are always lame, but i did watch most of this one. I will say some of it was pretty crappy, thought Kid Rock did ok, but the rest you couldn't even understand. As for the whole breast thing.... i say 'big deal" you had to really be paying attention to see anything,MTV shows a lot worse. I agree that a Country theme would be cool next year, but i doubt if i will watch. I watch the Superbowl for football not hafltime shows.

I Just watched the local news, and it was an acident but it wasnt acording to janet anyway. Justin was supose to pull at her top but there was supose to be a thin red lace under that, with the star pasty in the middle. Instead the red lace came off with the top revealing her boob with just the star pasty.

Janet says she takes full blame her and justin decided this without anyones knoweldge and it backfired. Ill try to find a link with what she said officially.

But that's the whole point, Mo.

What they get away with putting on subscriber TV is one thing. What goes out over the broadcast band is another. These so called entertainers don't give a crap about what the rules are, they are out there to challenge them and push them to the limit and beyond.

Look, I am no prude but there would not have been a problem if Timberlake kept his hands to himself. What was supposed to be a suggestive act turned into reality. Why did they even need that sort of action as part of the act. It is pure garbage clothed in the overused term of "artistic expression."

I hope they fine every station. Send a message to clean up TV. I think I heard that Jack Parr got fired for using the term "water closet". Just compare the difference to what they say now.

Yeeh i know they get away with a lot on regular tv, but the censors let them. Just like Nascar you are going to get entertainers, producers, and networks pushing the limit of what they can get away with. I for one was not offended by the breast thing, what i was offended by was the lousy entertainment. The halftime show is always crappy, maybe they should just do away with it and show highlights of the past season. As for Janet Jackson....she needed to resurect her career and this stunt will do that. She got all the attention she wanted,IMO it was a calculated gamble , something that was planned way in advance. When was the last time you heard of her before Sunday?

now most of all of you are saying it was a crappy halftime show and a couple said they liked kid rock but the rest sucked including janet, that tells me that y'all did'nt care for the performers or the music or both. Personally I like all kinds of music and I liked the show the only thing I did'nt like is all the lipsyncing, these performers get paid all this money at least they could do is perform live.

I think they should limit the halftime show to ONE performer and they have to sing live!

That would take care of all the Justin, Brittney, Janets, and other Pop-Junk who can't sing in the first place.

Only a band with real talent (and therefore respect for themselves) would be willing to take on that kind of show!

It would actually be a reward for the "best of the best" to get selected for the halftime show. Like it should be, rather than the 'I've heard of that guy..."

Oh...get rid of the hired fans too! (How lame are you that you have to pay kids to look interested in your music??)
