Newman's victory (he won The Winston in May....a non-points affair but the
money spends just the same) is the 42nd for Roger Penske, and his first by
a driver other than Rusty since Bobby Allison won the Southern 500 at
Darlington in September of 1975!

Ryan becomes the 163rd different driver to win a Cup race (he's tied for
105th on the all-time list), the 16th different winner this season (we had
19 last year), and the 3rd driver to win from the pole this season. All
that and $202,550 too.

Johnny Benson (4th) had his best finish since he was 3rd at Rockingham in
November of 2001. His Top-5 gives us 29 different drivers to hit that level
this season....last year we had 34.

Bobby Labonte (5th) had his best finish since he won at Martinsville in
April.

Ricky Craven (6th) had his best finish since he was 3rd at Lowe's Motor
Speedway in May.

Michael Waltrip (8th) had his best finish since he won at Daytona in July.

Ken Schrader (13th) had his best finish since he was 11th at Martinsville
in October of 2001.

Dont know who provided ya with that first fact but Jeremy Mayfield as Rusty's teammate driving for Penske scored a couple wins.

The biggest surprise to me of those stats listed is the Craven one, he had run so much better this year that I keep forgetting he is not consistantly a top 10 driver :)

Good food for thought post! Thanks

Kel

Mayfield did win twice in 2000, but maybe the "official" owner of the car at that time was Kranefuss. Not sure. Penske bought the 50% Kranefuss owned of the organization in October of 2000 which was after Jeremy's wins. Will see if I can find more info.

Good catch!:)

Ricky has had a up and down season, seems he and Dave Blaney both will have a few real strong cars and then fade for a while and then come back again.

Was that 42nd Cup win or does it include his other series cars also?

Yeppers 42 WC wins

First was in 1973, Mark Donahue at Riverside.

From 1974 to 1975 Bobby Allison won 4 times in Penske rides.

1981 to 2001 Rusty won 36 times for Roger

Ryan in 2002 adds 1 more.

I was not able to watch much of the race this week. What happened to Ward? He was moving up through the middle of the pack early, the next thing I saw he was 6 laps down. Cut a tire or 4?

About 50 laps or so before the end Ward and John Andretti got together and both spun. Both were able to continue and no caution flag flew both drivers lost a lot of time as racing continued. Ward didn't directly balme John for the incident, but between the lines he wasn't real happy with him I don't think. John said he was fighting a tight car. Seems like just one of them deals.

WARD BURTON (No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Intrepid R/T) Finishes 38th
"I got under the 43, but I didn't give him enough time. I'm not sure if he knew how far I was under him. I apologized to my guys. I feel like I messed up their day by being a little impatient. John does drive us awful hard sometimes, but I know that going in. I should have given it more time. We would have passed him in another lap or two."

Thanks HS. Sounds to me like Ol' Ward wrecked himself. Case of 2 drivers who have had some tough luck both trying to capitalize on good cars this week. Oh well, feces occurs sometimes.

I forgot to mention, and you might not have caught it. Earlier in the race Ward was struck by foul fortune when one of Dave Blaney's (pitted directly in front of Ward) tires escaped during a yellow flag stop. One of Dave's crewman dashed onto pit road to retrieve it just as Ward was gunning out of his pit. Ward fortunately reacted quickly, slamming on the brakes, but still the crewman was knocked off his feet. No injuries, but the incident had to cost Ward some spots and his concentration likely needed a few momenst to recover as well.

LOL, took me a while to figure why the question.

The 27 was owned by Raymond Beadle.

The reason for the confusion is a typo, Rusty went full time with Penske in 1991 not 1981, sorry for the confusion.:)

I had totally forgotten about Kranefuss(sp) and his association with Roger and the 12 team. I do recall last year posting owners points for some reason and Jeremy's car was listed as Michael's not Roger's so I am sure that is the reason. I also misrepresented Jeremy's career wins, that would be three not just a couple, a Cally win and a pair of Pocono's.
