So the NHL may or may not be expanding to 32 teams in the very near future. Paul Kelly said yesterday that Quebec City and the Toronto area will get teams via expansion, but Bill Daly said this isn't true. We do know that a second Toronto area team is a very real possibility though. They're just about ready to build an arena in Markham (North of Toronto, on the other side of the 407): http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=414799
I don't know how I feel about two teams in the Toronto market, but I do know that they can't do this by expansion. It's another team to fit into the revenue sharing plan, which was part of the reason we almost lost another season. No one knows what revenue will look like going forward, and there are teams in the southern US that can't even fill half their buildings when they're winning. It would seem ill advised to jump into expansion this quickly.
Markham would be wise not to start this thing too soon. They built the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton 30 years ago, and they still can't get an NHL team.
