The Winternationals, the first event of the 2003 NHRA season, began Thursday at Pomona, Calif. After a busy offseason which saw numerous key changes take place at many teams, the NHRA's best are ready to roll. Larry Dixon, the defending Top Fuel champion, led Thursday's first round of qualifying. In the Funny Car class, it was Tim Wilkerson who posted the quickest pass. Troy Coughlin, meanwhile, topped the Pro Stock session.
