No AT&T for the #49 in 2004?

Hearing that Nextel has said AT&T can NOT sponsor the #49 car next year. NASCAR has told the team it will have to find another sponsor for 2004. Apparently NASCAR gave Nextel the choice because of the grandfathering of current sponsors, and Nextel said no. AT&T has sponsored the team all year. Not sure how this affects the #49 for next season or Ken Schrader.

ABSOLUTE BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If nextel can say a company can't sponsor a car then they should have to foot the bill
A$$HOLES

i think na$car done pooped in their nest on this one :dual9mm: :dual9mm:

i agree........i know nextel is paying a ton of money to sponser NASCAR.....but the race cars are not owned by NASCAR...they are seperate companies.......they should not have a say in what sponser goes on the car.

I think that Nextel can do whatever it wants. It's just simple capitalism, if a company directs money to an operation and that operation doesnt follow what that company dictates them to do, the company can at anytime cancel sponsorship. As for the issue of the teams bein separate, hell, they're basically governed by NASCAR and NASCAR has to follow what Nextel tells them to do. So basically, AT&T fans, you're screwed.

Hmmmmm... $70 million a year? I'd think that I'd better have a say about a whether or not a competitor can sponsor a car. Gee, I have not seen any Marlboro sponsered cars out there. How about a Kool car? A Newport? Nope.

Why would they tell AT&T they could not sponser a car and let the 12 and 31 car keep theirs.

They let Alltel and Cingular in becuas they already had sponsor agreements and were already primary sponsors, AT and T wasn't

There are MANY telecommunications companies who have sponsored races, cars and drivers. I heard that AT&T will be allowed to sponsor the BAM car but without the Globe logo. What a puzzlement!
Remember "Front Row Joe" sponsored by Bell South? MCI, Verizon and others?
I think it's all abour NA$CA$H and the next thing will be PPV.
Was Qualifying even broadcast today?

i think AT&T should be able to because they have sponsered the car already this year.
and i doubt PPV will ever happen, not enough people would pay to watch, i know that my family wouldn't simply because that's money that's needed elsewhere.

Yeah, It was on Speedchannel. [/b][/quote]
I was at work with no personal net service except for my company (AT&T) just to do my job. I was able to catch the last few minutes on trackpass. :katsip:

I think NEXTEL's desire to keep out the competion is natural. But NASCAR has the responsibility to look out for the well being of the sport and the teams who compete in it.

By allowing NEXTEL to have this much power over even existing sponsors( Alltel and Cingular can stay but only with their current teams), NASCAR has weakened the positions of teams struggling to find sponsors for next year.

So far the #99 and #1(assuming Pennzoil does leave Cup racing) don't have sponsors. Plus AOL is still noncommital to reupping with the #30, Kodak may leave the #4 car and BAM racing probably won't continue past this year without a major sponsor.

Capitalism is great, but it's not so great to have the potential for less than 40 full time cars next year. AT&T isn't even a wireless Company primarily. I 've always thought of it in regards to land line phones. So I'm unclear how AT&T is banned completely. There also hints that NEXTEL won't let in any company with ties to wireless technology. That covers alot of ground.

In these economic times NASCAR is doing the fans and the teams a great disservice. Short term gain, long term pain.

what about Skoal?

Plus Cingular and Alltel Can only stay with childress and Penske which but if they leave the team and dont go to a teammate they can not sign with another racing team and can not come back to Nextel Cup if they leave :dual9mm:

If anything I believe this is good news for Ryan Newman and Robby Gordon. Now both of these guys have sponsorship basically sealed because if they leave their respective teams then they are out of the sport for good. Companies like competition, and trust me they will not abandon the sport and have Nextel basically monopoly the advertizing to all the millions of Nascar fans out there.

Both Cingular and Alltel are happy with their drivers and both are the most financially secure wireless companies besides Nextel, so I see these two sponsors sticking with their respective drivers/teams for a long time.
