Petty says sponsors didn't want Kurt Busch: Richard Petty said the reason Kurt Busch wasn't hired to drive his famous #43 was "personality." "Sponsorships," Petty said during a break in Thursday's test session at Daytona International Speedway. "Nobody at the time wanted to pay the bill for him. That's how simple it was." Busch, who was released from Penske Racing after a tumultuous 2011 season that led the 2004 Cup champion to seek professional help for anger issues, ultimately signed with Phoenix Racing. Petty said Smithfield Foods, which he introduced Thursday as a primary sponsor for the No. 43 car he drove to a record 200 victories and seven Sprint Cup championships, was among those that wouldn't come on board if Busch was involved. "Everybody has to protect their brand," Petty said. "Smithfield has a pretty laid back, pretty good down-home persona in the general public. If they had taken him on it would have changed their ... they just didn't like the personality." Petty said Best Buy, which left the #43 to join Roush Fenway Racing as a sponsor, had the same concern.(ESPN)(1-13-2012)

That's all reasonable . Petty would have preferred Busch as a driver but some sponsors are reluctant . At least he tried to put a deal together.

same thing will happen to kyle soon if he doesn't straighten out quickly.

Pray , pray , pray that the almighty sponsorship dollar does not chase all of the bad boys out of cup racing . If that ever happens , racing won't be worth watching and we won't have anything to talk about.

That won't happen. NASCAR knows that people need a hero to cheer on and a villain to boo, so they won't get rid of all the "bad" boys of NASCAR.

Oh I know Nascar wants to keep them , that's why we have "Have At It Boys " I'm talking about the prissy sponsors who are afraid of a little contraversy.

If I was sponsoring a team I want a driver who is determined to win, not a azzhat who goes off on his team cussing them out during the race or who walks off from a interview as he did with Punch. that'll inspire people to buy your product now won't it?

He'll have a meltdown halfway thru the season and will be selling hot dogs from a cart outside speedways.

think he and his brother will be ok but if not then so be it

Totally agree. I can sure do without the kind of crap coming from the Busch brothers. It has nothing to do with their driving, it is all about their mouth and attitude.

Prissy sponsors???? More like smart sponsors.

They are both a perfect fit for a Prozac sponsorship.

Yeah, even though they are azzholes, the Sport needs these guys.

I may have missed this but who the Sam Hill took over as CC for Kurt? I would really be surprised if Kurt lasts 18 races before he absolutely melts down.

I think Kurt will surprise you . He is a past cup champion and he does possess the intelligence to smarten up. Now he has a good reason.

I think Kurt should have smartened up a few years ago. He is a hot head that is beyond help. IMO

While I don't have a factual reference to point you to, I "heard" that Petty offered Kurt a ride and he turned it down because he wanted to race for a smaller team. Petty saying it was sponsor issues could be a way of covering that Kurt turned him down. But I'm just speculating.

I believe Petty over Kurt TBH.

Nick Harrison is handleing that deal, my prayers are with him.

Kurt wanted HMS equiptment, and when David Ragan stepped away from his deal to pursue Penske, Kurt stepped in. But I don't see any sponsors 'wanting' him until he improves his image.
