Pavement is officially being removed. When the NASCAR test ban first came about, the track record was reset at 212 MPH as teams used it for california and michigan testing.

Damn so they spent the time to get rid of all the flood cars only to rip the track apart. Smh. Another Westfield Mall coming to you.

Is there some form of development planned for the property? I can't imagine paying to have the pavement torn up otherwise, but I guess I've seen developers do stranger things.

Such a shame. I remember when TMS was being built, I wondered why when TWS was nearby and an interesting race track.

You have to remember that when TWS was built it REALLY was in the middle of nowhere. College Station back then was little more than the home of Texas A&M. Not many people lived there. The roads were an absolute nightmare --- nothing but Highway 6 and it was 2 lanes.
A great speedway -- but wrong place and wrong time. And really not close to Ft. Worth and North Texas.

Maybe it's just as well. If it was still in operation today we'd be calling it Brobdingnagian and calling for its dates to be moved somewhere smaller and less aero dependent.

Not if they were racing on the pavement that was just torn up :D

That may be the best idea yet in this whole 'Cup on dirt' discussion but like the other ideas, it won't happen either.

It would probably be a restrictor plate track if it were to host races today. Texas World is a 2-mile track with steeper banking than Michigan.

Memphis-Arkansas speedway 1.5 mile dirt track Cup ran on in the 50s, high banked. They planned to pave it it but never did. Was on the schedule for only like 3 years and killed 2 drivers.

Track had a very short lived race life and was really nothing more than a test facility for the majority of its existence. TWS and Ontario were the 2 tracks from the 70's that were still talked about when I first remember watching NASCAR. I remember Riverside's last race because of how big of a deal it was. Thankfully I recall watching tons of ASA races from the old Nashville Fairgrounds. Those races on TNN back in the day were awesome!! NASCAR stopped running there just before my time....
