No Provisionals?

It is often asked what the difference in starting fields would be if no provisional starting spots were in place.

Near as I can figure it for this season......

The Daytona 500 doesn't figure into the deal. Three races so far have had only 43 entries, Rockingham, Darlington and Martinsville, so they don't figure either. NHIS had qualifying rained out, who knows.

Of the remaining 14 races run only one has started the fastest 43 cars, Dover.

Las Vegas - Hideo Fukuyama would not have made the field, Greg Biffle would have.

Atlanta - Larry Foyt and Dale Earnhardt Jr would not have made the field - Jeff Fultz and Bobby Hamilton Jr would have

Bristol - Jack Sprague would have headed home - Hermie Sadler would be racing

Texas - Mike Waltrip and Ricky Craven are on the trailer - Kerry Earnhardt and David Starr are on the grid

Talladega - Dave Blaney packs early - Brett Bodine earns a buck or two.
-----------------note: Larry Foyt and David Green both have their times disallowed and neither made the race.

California - Kevin Harvick and Ward Burton are only dreaming - Hideo Fukuyama and Kerry Earnhardt are in the gold rush

Richmond - Brett Bodine is home - Hermie Sadler is at the track

Charlotte - Mike Wallace and Jimmie Johnson catch the trouble train - Brett Bodine and Hermie Sadler make tracks on the track

Pocono - Larry Foyt on the mountain trail - Derrike Cope runs the race

Michigan - Ricky Craven and Jimmy Spencer go home - Mike Skinner and Larry Foyt go racing

Sears Point - Ken Schrader, Jimmie Johnson, and Ricky Craven are pointed the wrong way - Paul Menard, Brandon Ash, and PJ Jones are in

Daytona - Todd Bodine and Dave Blaney are beached - Tony Raines and Kerry Earnhardt are in the swim of things

Chicago - Christian Fittipaldi is gone - Jason Keller is in.

Gain/Loss by provisional Summary:

Ricky Craven benefits most with +3 races
Blaney and JJ are next with +2
Kevin Harvick, Dale Jr, Mike Waltrip, Jack Sprague, W. Burton, Mike Wallace, Jimmy Spencer, Ken Schrader, T. Bodine, and Christian Fittipaldi all gained +1 with no offset.
Larry Foyt is +1
Hideo breaks even
Kerry Earnhardt and Hermie Sadler are the big losers at -3
Greg Biffle, Jeff Fultz, Bobby Hamilton Jr, David Starr, Derrike Cope, Mike Skinner, Paul Menard, PJ Jones, Brandon Ash, Tony Raines, and Jason Keller are -1
Brett Bodine offsets to a -1

I never thought about it like that. That is very interesting.

That is interesting HS.
Craven might want to step up his qualifing a notch...or two.
Johnson not making Charlotte, and he won...
Very interesting.

Great info. That would sure change the landscape of the points race.
