I just heard that they are not repaving Daytona, they are putting in a concrete patch about 8 feet to cover the hole. Those cheap bastards. DW is, in a nice way, going off on the decision. Saying that the track is beyond needing a new surface.

They had an article on NASCAR.com the other day about this. NASCAR officals said the patch is only temporary. There's not enough time between now and the July race to do a re-paving. I would expect after the July race they would repave.

Ahhhhhh. Waltrip made it sound like they were not doing it at all for a while. Thanks.

I read where they say the repaving will be done by 2012. We are forgetting one thing about any repave. The racing is terrible for two or three years because of the lack of rubber in the asphalt. We've seen it before after a repave, and this place will be no different.

Yea I remember when they repaved Lowes, they had problems with it too. Of course I think that was due mostly to one of the turns sinking into the ground. It was awhile ago.

You are correct. I am in favor of patching as long as it is effective.

I beg to differ, maybe the racing at the cookie cutter tracks suffer, but 'dega has not missed a beat since the new pave job there. They paved that track in between spring and fall race if I can remember correctly. Why can they not do same at Daytona?

Because they already had the equipment at the track the day of the spring race, and had the entire track gone in under 5 days.

All they need to do after a repave, is do a couple test sessions and run some tire packs around the track behind some trucks.

If they repave the track, won't they be removing the bumps in turn four? They tend to make it tougher on newer drivers and spead the pack out.Once you make it perfectly smooth, the pack should be tighter than ever.Hope that makes everyone happy.

I think I undertood what your saying. If it only took 5 days to pave dega, then they have plenty on time to get the contractor and equipment from the 'dega pave job to Daytona and pave it before the July race, which is 5 months away.

I say pave it now, and leave the bumps. They are part of the character of the racetrack, and they make the racing better for that. These after all are supposed to be the best drivers in the world, so make em prove it by having them navigate around the toughest surfaces and tracks in the world(stockcar world).

Don't believe them. There is PLENTY of time to repave. This is Florida we are talking about here and it is more than warm enough to start work on it tomorrow. Believe me, I work in road construction and that operation could be pulled off before July - no problem. The reality is that they would pay a premium to get it done.

Well with the bigger plates the cars are able to get away from each other, I say repave the corners for July , then finish the rest of the track after the race.

I'm just saying...Be careful what you wish for.Anything that separates the cars is a good thing right?

Oh I agree on the seperation thing but the track is way too bumppy in the corners and upsets the cars suspensions to the point where bottoming out becomes a huge problem. It needs to be repaved, fix it and I don't think the racing will suffer very much.
