As a resident of the Daytona Beach area I see all the hotels and motels they havent even started to fix from the hurricanes everyday . Besides being an eye sore and the problems the police are having keeping the homeless from squawting in them it hasnt really been a big problem untill now .

Tourists that have booked stays at many of the damaged motels and hotels have not been notified or even worst lied to about the condition or even availability of rooms . Some hotel owners trying to keep deposits or full payments on rooms have told people that thier hotels were not damaged or that they will be fixed in time for the races bike week spring break etc .

If you have a room reserved in the area check with the Chamber of Commerce or call a friend in the area to confirm that the motel you booked is even still there ,several motels burned after the hurricanes .

I f you dont have a room around Daytona yet forget it you cant get one for 60 miles in any direction for the race . JAX is probaly your best bet .

Guess there's no chance that you're inviting us to stay with you, is there Pandora? ;)

Pandora, I'm not sure if anyone from here will be traveling to Daytona for the races next month, but they may know someone who is. I will say this, Thank YOU very much for that information. It is very much appreciated!

nice of the hotels to notify people. course all they care about is money right now.

Many of the hotels and motels will never be rebuilt because of new zoning bylaws and because they would cost to much to bring up to the new hurricane code . Be careful when calling to confirm your hotel there have been incidents where people where assured of rooms when they called private operators only to find out that only the hotel phone # was the only thing still in operation by forwarding it to a private address after the hotel had been closed by the state .

Just in case anyone wants to know WHY these buildings are not being rebuilt. It is because of Florida law. The contractor law prohibits newcomers from attaining a license to do work in the state. SO any workers that arrive to help out MUST go to work for an established contractor. And they only pay hourly wages, so the new people go back home. It will be MANY years before Florida is rebuilt at the rate they are going now.

The law was enacted after hurricane Andrew and Bandits/Contractors did shoddy work ,took down payments and then didnt do the work and ran back to Lik Skillet Ohio or where ever they were from . Some Florida contractors pay hourly and some pay by the job . People down here are leary of carpet baggers and such .

I speak for well known and highly respected contractors from around here that went to Florida and all have come back saying the Florida contractors have all the profit hogged up and will not share any. I have heard some say the Florida guys don't care when it gets finished it will be more money for them. Also I doubt shoddy with all the inspections that must be made while construction is ongoing.

Pandora, THANK YOU!!!

I have a "confirmed" reservation at The Buccaneer for my friends, and haven't heard anything. At least they can stay with a mutual friend at his winter home near Ocala.

Betsy I am sure you are with a very good contractor and I have read that many of the out of state contractors are P/O with the new law . Your right that they inspect everything now but when every person in the state of Kentucky with a pick up truck became a roofer after Andrew the rip offs were in the Millions mostly Sr citizens and they screamed for this law . First they were way to lax in giving out contractors licences and now they are way too strict .....You just have to love big goverment .

The Buccaneer in Ormond Beach is open and looks fine except for palm trees with the tops broke off .

It's not that I doubt you, Pandora, but I'm just wondering how you would know this? Are some hotel owners publically admitting it? Maybe even bragging about it?

My brother and his friends were notified quite a while ago that their motel is out of service. Their deposits are already returned. Then they got a call with another offer. So they are some of the lucky ones.

There have been reports in some of the local papers .Mostly of small motels who told people that repairs would be done in time for special events in the area . When your motel needs 3 to 6 months worth of repairs and events are just a month away ...well you get the picture . Remember this is Daytona where the local paper dosent report tourists getting mugged because it is bad for the tourist business.
