Gear rules this year will take the option of shifting away at Pocono, keeping the RPMs down, thus keeping the speeds down. Bummer.

^ i think taking shifting away makes for better racing

No Shifting at Pocono: Changes in NASCAR's gear rules mean competitors will not be able to shift through the turns this Sunday at Poco#"I disagree with the gear rule," Jeff Gordon says. "At Pocono, we'll be way down on RPM, and we won't be able to shift. It's like putting a restrictor plate on the cars at New Hampshire. We won't be able to pass, and that's not a good thing." Many competitors feel the lack of horsepower will produce single-file racing.

Bummer! Heck I can watch single file out here on the freeway..

NASCAR raced at Pocono for quite a few years without shifting gears and no one complained about it.
Of course that was another generation of drivers and mechanics playing the game back then.

The Indy cars used to run there without shifting gears.
No one complained about it.
But once again, it was a different generation of drivers and mechanics.

Of course it was an entirely different generation of fans as well.
Most of them appreciated racing, not just a pretty face or a driver living off his Daddy's reputation.

I wonder what Jeff Gordon did in his sprint car without any transmission to shift? Must have slowed him down and led to single file racing?

single file racing? more of the same....boring boring boring

Have any of you folks given any real thought as to what brings about single file racing?

The biggest reason for single groove racing is NASCAR's attempt to "level the playing field".
The constant efforts to bring about complete parity in order to bunch up the field and nearly all of the cars being close to equal has perhaps been too successful?

At one point in time, a good mechanic could set the car up to run anywhere on the track; those were the cars that usually were found in Victory Lane. That is no longer the case.

With all the parity the field is bunched up, but no one can go anywhere if their car is no better than the car that's in front of them.
With all the cars being equal, they need to run the same line or groove around the track, they're unable to go high or low to pass and we end up with parades and expensive demolition derbys instead of racing.

But we all know that it's those lousy Goodyear tires, those boring race tracks or whatever other excuse sounds good today.

There is no way parity could have brought about a boring show for the folks, is there?

Howdy BoB your 2ed post completely cancels out your first one.. Do you have dual personality's? I do agree with the 2ed post however.

Yeah, I didn't intend it to come out like that, but...
I see where you could take it that way.

Maybe I do have dual personalities?
Or maybe it's all brought about because I spell my name backwards?
Perhaps old age and senility is settling in?

It must have been NASCAR's fault. Right?
Seems as if everything else gets blamed on them, so why not include my mental state?

I must be senile too.........I didn't see the second post canceling the first (or vice versa). I sort of thought the second was an extension of the first!! :D It is the parity that has brought about single groove racing. A little parity is good..........but to make every car the clone of the others aerodynamically has taken that way too far.

I remember the cries and screams from owners, drivers and fans about Ford having an advantage over Chevy (or the other way around) and a whole lot of fans yelling for NASCAR to do something to equalize the cars........."no Chevy should be allowed to beat a Ford simply because Chevy had a better aerodynamic design!!" Heaven forbid the manufacturer would have to step up to the plate and compete!!! That's when we started getting single file racing..........when NASCAR responded to the owners, drivers and fans and brought out the common templates. That old saying "careful what you wish for" applies here.

And as far as shifting is concerned, all I hear is whining. Everyone is in the same boat..........they have a gear rule that everyone must obey. I know there's a way to run fast without shifting.........because it's been done before. Even before parity reared it's ugly head. Some will figure it out........some won't. And the whiners will probably be the ones who won't.

Listening to INC tonight it sounded as if the media is the ones making a big deal out of gear rule at Pocono. Mikey, Kenny, and Joe Nemecheck agreed that it was a great idea that they would not have to shift this weekend.

So, is this race going to be another Daytona or Talladega? We have to wait for the "big one" before we can think about who might win?

Naw...........the corners are too flat to be another Daytona or Talladega! :D

Sounds like there was some shifting afterall during happy hour.

Please set me straight here on this new gear rule. As far as I know they all have to run the same rear end gear. Is this rule now also applied to the transmissions? I had heard, that in the past few years that they have been shifting, that 3rd gear was a 1 to 1 and 4th was an overdrive gear. have the overdrive transmissions been eliminated?
Thanks

I'm not sure racer8 but from the chit chat on Trackside that I heard it's that the teams were using basically the same transmission they use for road courses and they used a rear end gear specially designed for Pocono to get the higher speeds on the long straights........the new gear rule made the use of that transmission impossible. I don't think the rule says they can't shift at Pocono if they want to, it just made it so that if they do shift they'll probably blow the engine. Like I said earlier, some will figure it out and go fast, some won't!! :) And it's usually the whiners who won't figure it out. It's a rule that every team has to adhere to and compensate as needed in order to win. It's a curve ball thrown their way and they need to learn to deal with it. Gripping about it don't get it done. :D
