Northwestern players win an important court ruling

I, for one, hope they win in their bid so abolish the ridiculous system the NCAA has had in place for many years. The way they treat what they like to refer to as "student-athletes" is ridiculous and has been for many years now. I plan on going into much more detail on my thoughts on the issue when I have more time later.

The NCAA's system is nothing more than a modern cotton plantation.

I need some explanation. Does this mean college players could get paid? Legally paid I mean.....
It still has to reach the national office in D.C. Then, maybe after years of appeals, they may. And, for the time being, it's only a push for private schools. The NLRB has no jurisdiction over public schools. The public universities will have to deal with their state.

I can easily see a boatload of athletic programs getting shuttered. For the 2012-2013 year, only 23 out of 228 D1 public school athletic departments made enough money to cover their expenses. If (when) athletes get to be paid, a bunch of programs are going to get shut down or drop to D3 or something similar.

good deal, this can mean that the pro stick n ballers can come down and play on the college teams...just like Nascar. They won't have to get a degree in balloon blowing either to play.

That's what the NCAA and the schools are trying to get people to focus on is the idea of students wanting to get paid by their schools to play football, basketball, etc.

Initially, at least, the students are trying to unionize to collectively bargain for things like health care for injuries sustained while playing for the school, which they don't always have right now, not having the school yank a scholarship for whatever reason they feel like, and other issues.

The thing is, if the court rules that the athletes are allowed to make money off of the athletes as well as the school and their administrators do, the athletes would be able to do a lot of things to make their own money that would not require the schools to pay them directly. They could do commercials, autograph signings, and many other things to capitalize on the work that they do.
