Phoenix Racing could close shop at end of 2012 season: James Finch, a 20-year-plus veteran NASCAR team owner, who this year has been fielding #51 Chevrolets for Kurt Busch, says unless there is a big change in economics in this sport "I'll have to hang it up at the end of this season." Finch says the new 2013 NASCAR stockers will obsolete his entire fleet of race cars. "I'll have to throw everything away," Finch says. Finch has no major sponsor this season, and his hauler here is painted stark black. He used Hendrick engineering, at a price of course, and he leased Hendrick engines, at a price too of course.(MikeMulhern.net)(9-8-2012)

A semi successful part timer bites the dust. Really wished he could get a sponsor.

It's a real shame nobody wants to sponsor a past champion doushebag driver.
If someone could stuff a sock in his mouth and keep him away from any microphones then I'm sure NASCAR fans would benefit from seeing Kurt Busch in a quality, competitive ride. He's certainly hard to listen to on the radio and I think he's forgotten about his encounter with Spencer but you cannot dispute his ability to drive a stock car.

It's a shame to see a guy who's been in the sport so long and put so much in on the verge of being out of business. I'm sure he thought bringing Kurt in would have attracted some sponsorship and some better results especially at restrictor plate races and road courses. For a guy that's had a lot of downs in this sport, I wish it would've worked out better for his sake.

Mr . Finch had no sponsor before he hooked up with Kurt . It's sad that he rolled the dice and no sponsor saw the possibilities . With more media attention and the car running up front , it might have worked in a better market . I hope that he can recover financially.

Andy Petree said that Kurt is loved by the team and Mr. Finch wishes he could find a full-time sponsor in order to keep the team afloat.

Sad...

I still think his best bet is a pharmaceutical company (fixed that for you;-}) that specializes in chemical imbalances. ;)

Novartis Pharmaceuticals, the makers of Ritalin would be a great match!
Good call, FB!

Best driver Finch ever had? Brad Keselowski. 1 win and 3 top 10's in 5 starts.

Best driver finch ever has was Jeff Purvis, but im biased cause I love dirt racing and they were fielding dirt cars and stock cars for nascar at the same time.

James is from just up the coast from me and is a helluva good guy and we all wish him well and understand why he uprooted waved bye and moved to NC. His biggest sponsor was Yellow freight until they withdrew from racing support. One team + one good driver + one good sponsor would put him in heaven for the rest of his days. And yes I agree Jeff Purvis was one of his favorite drivers. If he had stayed in trucks or what was then Busch he would no doubt still be a contender but that is not what he is, he is very competitive and is damn sure fun loving.

I like Finch, but you have to be crazy to run in Cup without sponsorship. If you win every race you could survive, but not because of the pursues, just the inevitable sponsorship that would follow winning every cup event. I am surprised that they are not getting associate sponsors to at least offset some of the expense.

He must be making an incredible amount of money in the construction business to have raced this season.

With the economy in the ****ter the way it has been for the past four years I'm amazed anyone can find sponsors willing to put money into racing sponsorships. EVEN the Big Teams are having problems keeping or picking up sponsorship dollars.
It's a double edged sword for the sponsors, sponsor prices have gone up thru the years but now due to the economy less fans are attending and watching because they just can't afford it. If we don't get some "Change" ( ) soon I'm afraid it will get even worse.

The big teams tend to get the big sponsors. I hated to see the old owner/driver teams go away but that's the evolution of the sport. We could be left a few big teams and half the field start and parks.

Most folks would be happy to see the start and parks disappear .That will eventually leave the five or six big teams , with no hope of a new one starting up. That will be a sad day.

Have you been to a football game lately? The ticket prices are unreal with lower level seating running from $300 to $1200. Now, answer the corruption question.

When was the last time a NASCAR driver got arrested in a club for carrying or discharging a weapon.

I agree, Smoke14. Ticket Prices are outrageous! But corruption? I dunno...

Ticket prices are all based on the free enterprise system of supply and demand be it the NFL, NBA or NA$$CAR. If people stop going, the prices will drop. When the stadium is sold out for every game, why drop prices?

BTW, price out tickets to see the Lakers at Staple's Center if you want to see outrageousness! But they sell out every freaking game! Bear in mind that there are only 20,000 or so folks in the arena, however. Still, 41 sellouts per year is damn impressive!

I don't think that comparing the NFL to NA$$CAR is a fair comparison. The Packers, for example, play 8 games - half their season - at home and there is still a "death watch" for the right to buy tickets. That's not comparable to NA$$CAR's nomadic existence, IMO.

That's it! Sell NASCAR franchises, then hold half the races at your own tracks. Wait, did I just describe the France family?

I have no idea what you are going on about.

Nosebleed seats for the Pats are $85, a waste of 85 bucks if you ask me...but you didn't. I don't care.

Will RCR,JGR,EGR,RFR Penske etc exist after the present owners assume room temp? Who will take over?
Have these teams priced themselves out of reach?

na$car should have limited teams to two, no more IMHO. No putting a car in your wife or dad's name ala rousch.

I'm sure Finch had sponsorship in mind by bringing in Kurt even if it was a lower dollar sponsor. All this tells me is Kurt has made such a bad name for himself that even a low budget sponsor wants to avoid him.

RPM should close up shop.

Is Furniture Row looking at a second team. Kurt and Regan would be good teammates.

There's been talks of a second team but Smith is not signed for 2013 either. RPM got an offer from Chevrolet that included a technical alliance with RCR, that may help them a little bit. They've certainly had a hard time gaining any consistency at RPM.

It works out wonderfully for them. The amount of revenue sharing they get makes them viable and profitable.

Please Google "franchising nascar" and read a few of the opinions. It just will not work for NASCAR...

3 wins in 111 races. Not exactly settin the track on fire. I'd like to see Ambrose in top-tier equipment.

I don't care if they don't get any wins , I love to see the Petty name out there racing . Sorry if they haven't won enough for you . But that's all that matters I suppose.

I'm guessing it matters to sponsors. The Petty name pretty much went by the sidelines when the old man retired. Kyle sure as heck did nothing but "occupy" a race car. It's the end of an era. I'm already over it.
