November 5, 1967: Here’s an oddity I doubt we’ll see repeated. Thirty cars start the Western North Carolina 500 at the half-mile Asheville-Weaverville Speedway in Weaverville, N.C. Six finish. But there’s more. Only the top three finishers complete 500 laps -- winner Bobby Allison, Richard Petty (second) and David Pearson. They lead all but three laps, which are led by fourth-place finisher Dick Hutcherson, who completes 490 laps. The 10th-place finisher, Tom Pistone, completes fewer than half the laps, 226.
