10 Million a year, he'd be crazy not to!!

Jarrett/Toyota offer..$20 million? UPDATE done deal? Toyota - The Japanese automaker has pumped in tens of millions of dollars into its teams to launch a Nextel Cup program in 2007. Car owner Michael Waltrip is rumored to be dangling a two-year, $20 million contract in front of Dale Jarrett to get him into a Toyota.(Speed Channel)
UPDATE: #99-Dale Jarrett, the 1999 NASCAR Cup champion, is expected to help head up the company's [Toyota] 2007 entry into the series, agreeing to join Michael Waltrip Racing next season. Several sources have confirmed that Jarrett, 49, informed Robert Yates Racing officials of his decision April 26. UPS, the primary sponsor of the No. 88 Ford, is also in the final year of its contract with the team. And sources have indicated that the overnight delivery service provider would like to remain with RYR, provided the team can sign a competitive driver rather than someone just embarking on a Cup career. If the latter is the case, it's likely that UPS will make the move with Jarrett to Waltrip's organization. RYR typically attempts to sign sponsors for the length of its drivers' contracts. Because of that, those sponsors have some leverage in driver selection. Possible driver candidates that have been mentioned in the Toyota mix have included Richard Childress Racing's Kevin Harvick and owner/driver Robby Gordon. However, car owner Richard Childress said April 29 that he is close to signing Harvick to an extension. Gordon, who has fielded his own team since 2005, has an existing relationship with Red Bull through his off-road racing efforts.(in part from SceneDaily.com)(5-3-2006)

I guess you can argue that "a guys gotta do what he's gotta do" and here I sit with just barly a pot to wizz in , but man that is a guy selling his soul for the big bucks.
Don't misunderstand, I don't have a problem with Toyota coming into Cup, in fact I hope Robby Keeps his long time relationship with Red Bull and switches to Toyota.
But Dale only has a couple years left as a driver, and I'm sure Robert would love to have him stay on to work with development drivers etc.
IMO the man has NO loyalty to anyone but himself. JGR set up a team completely based around DJ including hiring his brother in law as crew cheif, and DJ dumped them in half a heartbeat to go to RYR. It sure wasn't because the JGR cars weren't competitive, DJ won the Daytona 500 right out of the box in the #18. Now Robert's stuck by DJ in a whole lot more rough times than DJ gave them good times and DJ will throw them fight under the bus for a few bucks.
Welp, Congratulations DJ! I'm sure MWR can help turn you into the next laughing stock of NASCAR just like DW was his last couple years. I'll bet you're thanking God for those "Past Champion Provisionals" now, you'll probably be using them an awful lot.

Yep!!!! Gotta agree this time. Guess "Loyalty" is a foreign" concept?????
Go with the $$$$$, regardless. Keeping in mind, DJ ain't hurting none in the first place!!!!!

If we were in that position, would WE turn down 20mil.... not likely. Besides HIS contract is up this year. He can go and do what he wants.

Don't pin that loyality thing on the drivers...There are plenty of teams/owners that will only think of themselves when the time comes.

If I were already making 5, 8, 10, mil a year for as many yrars as DJ has with Yates, Yes................ i would think of "loyalty". What more can he need????
You or I, making the peanuts we do, (in comparison) would, of course JUMP at the chance to make millions a year!!! LOL I sure would!
Robert Yates has given DJ some of the best years of his driving career. What the H*** has Mikey got for him??? In MY opinion, MIkey is just another one of the "field fillers". NAPA stayed with him, though only God and NAPA know why. LOL
I always respected DJ for his ability and judgement. Now, I'm not so dang sure.

Oh please enough with all this loyalty BS.... do you think your employer could give a crap about you in your current job? Same issue here, it is all a business and DJ is making the right decision. Besides Toyota is not coming into Nascar to be an also ran, they will be very competitive. Just look at the last truck race and tell me that Toyota isn't for real.

Jarrett Headed To Waltrip Racing and Toyota?
Toyota has yet to put a car on the track in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, but the automotive giant appears to have already landed its first NASCAR champion. Dale Jarrett, the 1999 NASCAR Cup champion, is expected to help head up the company's 2007 entry into the series, agreeing to join Michael Waltrip Racing next season.

Several sources have confirmed that Jarrett, 49, informed Robert Yates Racing officials of his decision April 26. Jarrett, in the final year of his contract at RYR, had said earlier this year that he hoped to continue competing in Cup through the 2008 season. But when asked April 29 about a possible move to Toyota next season, Jarrett deflected the question, saying he would talk only about Talladega.

However, while he has often noted a certain allegiance to car owner Robert Yates and to Ford, he did address rumors of his departure that have circulated through the garage.

Toyota will enter Cup competition - putting its popular Camry model on the track - with three organizations fielding a total of six teams: Michael Waltrip Racing, Bill Davis Racing and Red Bull Racing with two teams apiece. Waltrip and Jarrett would handle the driving duties at MWR, while current BDR driver Dave Blaney will drive one car for Davis. Red Bull, a start-up team, has yet to name drivers for either of its cars.(Scene Daily)

In the grand scheme of things, what would YOU do?

I would not jump ship just yet, sure money is nice and all, but thats what nascar has become, it no longer about the racing just how much money you can make.

His contract is up at the end of the year...he's not jumping ship. People move on when their contracts are up.

hey all, I don't go to work everyday just for the love of teaching. I go because I get paid. If I have someone I tutor for 40.00 an hour and someone I tutor for 25.00 an hour who want to schedule tutoring at the same time...who do you think gets the slot? It has been made very obvious to me that my employer doesn't give a crap about me, so if and when a better offer pops up, I'm going.
RYR is one of the few teams that hasn't recently put development drivers into a Cup ride, I would like to think that they're sitting on some talent. Sure, they might miss DJ, but they can get someone else. If I were Toyota, I would go for Sadler, not Jarrett.
And honestly, personal ill feelings for Michael Waltrip aside, who in their right mind would purposely "go" to his team for a job...aside from someone trying to break in? Tell me?
Its been a long time since racing, at the NASCAR level has been about racing.

Yep i agree, i don't know why people are so stuck on this loyal stuff. So what if he has a different sponsor and different car he is still DJ. I'd pull for Kasey if he ran a different car and sponsor, thought it was all about the driver?

what i ment by jump ship is to move to a new make because they have a deep pocket. Sure they are doing very well in the trucks, but i would give em a year to get all the bugs wored out b4 i singed a contract with em.

So, since we are taliking about loyalty let's list some others that are traitors:

Bobby Labonte
Jamie McMurry
Kurt Busch
Sterlin Marlin
Jeff Burton

I'm sure there are others I could list that have moved on to other teams. Dale has been with Robert for over 10 years through both good and bad. I don't think either owes the other anything.

Sure I would rather he stay at RYR if it looked like he would go out on top of his game but that just is not happening there. Both DJ and Elliot are having problems there. So if he has a chance of winning with Toyota I'm all for it. They have been very successful in the Trucks and were right from the start.

Why? If you are getting a little long in the tooth and will be retiring soon anyway but they are willing to pay you the money, you takes the money.

And honestly, personal ill feelings for Michael Waltrip aside, who in their right mind would purposely "go" to his team for a job...aside from someone trying to break in? Tell me?

And, just because the team has Michael's name on it doesn't mean it will be a failure. I'm sure Toyota is getting him for his name not his driving ability. They will throw enough money and resources into this endeavor that they could probably put my name on it and there would be a modicum of success.

I was at Toyota's 1st win in NASCAR at MIS when the 24 truck one.

I just dont like the idea of Toyota comming in, wont be to long and Honda will have a car.

Why would that be a problem Lappy? IT'S A DANG BUSINESS! American companies have pulled out of NASCAR (see Pontiac, Chrysler/Daimler), have lost a bunch of $$$ because of lesser quality and outsourcing, are closing plants, just may miss the boat as far as being environmentaly concious and the overseas companies are willing to expand worldwide, have stepped up to the plate and are hitting home runs.
JMO, and your MPG may vary

Bobby Labonte contract up
I believe that Bobby's contract wasn't up until the end of THIS year ('06). But, it doesn't really matter. He felt he was doing what was right for HIM.

I think y'all oughta check out all the drivers and see who has never driven another make of car. Even the Ironhead once drove a Ford. Bill Elliott's father has probably not stopped rolling over in his grave with Bill going to a Dodge team, and then finally driving that Cheby in the Daytona 500. These days, probably Mark Martin has been the most loyal. Jeff Gordon got his start with Bill Davis and was supposed to hit the big times in a Ford, but money dangling in his face put him in that number 24. Loyalty in any sport went out the window when the money got big. NASCAR is no different.

So the $20M report is wrong, according to Mikey. He said that if DJ was wanting that much he wouldn't be able to sign him.
Also, as to Mikey's team, I think it was a very good move to get Ty Norris.

I saw that. Has anyone confirmed what the actual amoutn was? So far one media reports 20 and mikey said 10 but did HE mis-speak?

I won't believe anybody until a contract is signed, especially the "media".

MIKEY NEEDS A HAIRCUT!

Well, I think it is the same deal. What I understood it to be was a $20 million deal, thus $10 million per year for two years. I might be wrong though. I guess we will know in a couple of weeks.

Mikey never confirmed anything during the interview. All he said was he wanted DJ, no amount for his contract was confirmed, at least i didn't hear it.

You're right, no number was confirmed, BUT..... Mikey said "it's NOT $20 million, if it is I won't be getting him."

As usual the media gets a hold of it and blows it way out of proportion, now did you hear what Harvick got for a contract? NO....i don't know of any drivers that have had their contracts disclosed publicly!

Well at least DJ is asking the right people and getting the best advice he can... ;)

"I sat down with my dog the other day and discussed it with her because I was pretty sure she didn't have many people she could go to," Jarrett quipped. "So we had a good conversation and I bounced it off of her. Whenever she liked one of the options that I gave her, she would lick me on the face.

"She's really the only one that has any idea of really what's going on. I confided in her more than anyone else."

Zoie, a yellow Labrador retriever, isn't revealing any of Jarrett's secrets, and he's trying his hardest to keep his options private. All he would acknowledge Friday is that he had as many as six offers, but has pared them down to "a few."

And Mikey's response:
Waltrip, who will own one of Toyota's startup teams next season, is admittedly on the list. He's asked Jarrett about driving one of his cars, and Jarrett had not turned him down.

"We'll hire the best available guy we can get," Waltrip said. "I have talked to Dale Jarrett. How can you not? He's a champion. He's a friend. I've asked him, but haven't had any response."

Oh, and at least Yates has a back up plan:

Mears looking? 88? Garage insiders say that Casey Mears is the frontrunner for the #88 Ford ride and that UPS would stay on as a sponsor at Yates if the company hires a young gun that could compete with the marketing image of Denny Hamlin and Fed Ex. It is speculated, however, that Mears may have a letter of intent to run a fourth car at another organization already [RCR was rumored last week].(Motorsports.com)
BUT: Casey Mears’ contract ends after this season, but he says he’s talked to car owner Chip Ganassi about an extension.(Virgina Pilot)(5-6-2006)
