Didn't want to steal Bucks rant. Think you have troubles now? Wait until OBDIII is put in effect. The computer systems in new vehicles will broadcast, like OnStar, a signal that your check engine light is on. The signal with be intercepted by your state or forwarded to your state. You'll have a period of time and miles, currently proposed as 2 weeks and/or 500 miles, before you get a letter stating your registration will be revoked if repairs aren't made and verified at a state inspection facility within X days.

Welcome to 1984 and Big Bro..bro

They already have a system on some veh that have several computers talking to each other
It's called CAN
Controlled Access Network or something like that

I believe that system is on cars bought from the "buy here.pay here" places. Normally weekly payments for those with crappy credit. Be three days late, they throw the switch and the car won't start.

An interface between your personal or laptop computer and your vehicle's OBDII diagnostic bus. The hardware and software comprise a system which will read most standard OBDII data, as well as diagnostic trouble codes (DTC). Provides useful data for monitoring real time data, troubleshooting, and repair purposes.
The BR-3 interface supports the older OBDII protocols commonly used in many vehicles: VPW (General Motors), PWM (Ford), and ISO9141 (Chrysler, Asian, European, and many others), and ISO 14230 protocol (also called Keyword 2000 or KWP 2000). It does not support the newer CAN protocol.
The BR-CAN interface supports only newer CAN vehicle protocols. It is capable of both 11 bit and 29 bit ID fields, speeds of 500 k or 250 k bits per second (kbps), all automatically selected.
If your vehicle is earlier than 2004, it probably does NOT use CAN. Between 2004 and 2007, some vehicles may use CAN, depending on manufacturer, model, year and drivetrain. All 2008 or later cars use the CAN system.
If you are not sure, you can check to see if your vehicle(s) are listed as CAN models:
The OBD Clearinghouse web page lists not only the protocol used, but also shows the location of the car's connector. Vehicle OEM Database They also have documents (in either pdf or excel file) which list all the vehicle makes and models in a chart format. OBD clearinghouse

All GM vehicles with OnStar currently broadcast emission and diagnostic information to OnStar along with other data. Currently this information is protected under MDA ( similiar to HIPA laws ) as personal information. Our goverment is proposing to intercept this personal data and use it for it's own purposes ie they could not only check the emissions in your vehicle but also if your speeding, driving erraticly or not observing other laws Along with where you go every day.
I call Invasion of Privacy......but it's going to happen.
SST what you refer to as OBD III is already on many GM vehicles but is refered to as OBD2.

the federal govt already has access to gps data (where you are) any time, any where through the beloved and unconstitutional patriot act. the war against the people, err terrorism at it's finest. we will all be chipped at birth within 20 years.

*shrugs* How is this any different than the transponder I use when I go flying?
