NASCAR Nextel Cup Series driver Jimmy Spencer created a stir Wednesday during the Texas Tour 2004 Media Day at Texas Motor Speedway with an off-the-cuff remark about Japan and Toyota's entry into NASCAR's Craftsman Truck Series.

"Them [son of a guns] bombed Pearl Harbor, don't forget," Spencer said. "I hope Chevy, Ford and Dodge kick their [butts]."

On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese warplanes attacked the U.S. naval fleet at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, leading to a declaration of war against Japan and throwing the United States into World War II.

"I know Jimmy well and know that he was trying to be flippant and funny and certainly doesn't mean to offend anybody," said Eddie Gossage, executive vice president and general manager of TMS. "He didn't mean anything serious by that. I'm certain of that."

As he was leaving TMS, Spencer explained his comment.

"Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese. They killed a lot of innocent Americans," said Spencer, who will run a limited Cup schedule that includes an April 4 stop at TMS for the Samsung/RadioShack 500. "Those things are a thing of the past. Right now, Toyota is very important to this economy. I don't begrudge anybody coming to the United States.

"I think Toyota coming into the sport is great. I think it's saved the Truck Series."

Well I guess Jimmy's going to be Jimmy, and he's always going to be Jimmy.
Nothing like a nice racist statement to attract those sponsors. :angry:
 
Tell 'em Jimmy ;) Over 25,000 Americans killed on that black Sunday morning,Japan had not declared war before the attack,a dastardly deed that indeed backfired on Them big time,till We helped rebuild Them into a strong international economic partner in the world.Losing to the US/Allied forces is not all that bad.I'm sure that if the Axis powers would have won WWII(God forbid)the treatment of the defeated countries would have been much different,want proof,just look what the Japanese did in Nanking,China in 1937 onwards!

As far as Toyota coming into NASCAR,I'm against it,but it'll be fun to see Chevy kicking Their butts all over the place,HAHAHA.
I'm hearing now that Honda and Mitsubichi are talking about getting into the Cup Series at a future date,good grief :lol:
 
I don't think the Toyotas will do that good this year. They have to get the bugs ironed out first. After that they will be ready to run. :)

Hold on wait a minute now, who the hell dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that killed hundreds of thousands of Japanese.... not to mention some Japanese christians also, hey not to mention, old men, old women, and women and children?

You think we're still angry at the Japanese for Pearl Harbor? Ha, talk to them about Nagasaki and Hiroshima and get their feelings about it.

Jimmy's a hotbed of controversy, that he is, yes he can race and at times he can maintain himself, however there are some things that make me think otherwise.

I think the Japanese have contributed lots of things to our economy, for example, cars, electronics that are ten times as better than we have here for ex. Playstation 2, Gamecube, hell they even have that talking toilet that our scientists would take decades to make :o ! They've also deployed troops to Operation Iraqi Freedom, they were so gracious enough to allow us to launch fighter jets from bases in Japan to make sure the North Koreans arent doing stuff, we also have U.S Army and U.S Marine forces stationed there too. Hey, they also let us ship our wounded during Vietnam to Japan, they have to be pretty good friends to be giving us all this stuff even though we bombed them and killed hundreds of thousands of their people. In that case, Mr. Spencer needs to bite his tongue, we dont need another racist like that regardless of the fact whether he can race a car or not. Sorry for going off topic, but I think Toyota will be a formidable force in NASCAR, they wont blow it away not just yet, but able to be competing up there with Chevy, Ford and Dodge.
 
He said "I think they saved the truck series". I think the truck series just came off their most succesful season in the CTS series. IMO toyota will make CTS stronger, more competitve but toyota did'nt need saving.

Dropping the A bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki actually shortened the war by 6 months or more,not to mention saving thousands of American servicemen's lives that would have been lost in the planned ground assault on the Japanese home islands in spring 1946.Besides the Japanese brought it all on Themselves as They couldn't withdraw from China as that would mean losing face,yet They needed Our steel that was being embargoed at that time,so They decided to go to war,just didn't declare it before starting the war,U reap what U sow.IMO Harry Truman made the wise decision to drop the bombs.
I also thought it was rediculous that America paid reparations to ancestors of imprisoned Japanese civilians,Whom were for the most part imprisoned because of suspicions of possible spy affiliations.I never heard of any American ancestors getting paid by the Japanese government for the GI's killed on the Bataan Death March,what a sham IMHO.

Your ancestory may give you a need to defend the actions of those responsable for Pearl Harbor. But twisting facts and re-writing history doesn't sit well with people who's parents, aunts and uncles went to war to defend our country as a result of the cowardly ambush.

The Atom bombs saved hundreds of thousands of lives. The goal in war is to win with the least amount of casualties to your own people. We never wanted in the war, but when we were attacked we acted appropriately.
 
That being said, I don't think Jimmy was doing anything other than trying to be funny. I didn't find it terribly funny, but then I am not a big Jimmy Spencer fan. A Jimmy Spencer fan would find that hilarious and be even more endeared to Jimmy after hearing those comments.

It doesn't do much to help NASCAR shake the 'bigoted redneck' stereotype, but then who really cares? Those who spend their lived trying to find bigotry rarely ever realize that they are just as bigoted in their self-righteous views as the people they attack.
