COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - Police on Tuesday linked four of a dozen shootings along a stretch of Ohio highway, including one that killed a woman motorist last week.
A bullet fired last month through an elementary school window near the highway matched bullets or bullet fragments from three other shootings, including one that killed 62-year-old Gail Knisley on Nov. 25, the Franklin County Sheriff's office said.
The newly disclosed Nov. 11 shooting at the school occurred early in the morning, when no one was present, and none of the other shootings have injured anyone.
Police would not elaborate on the type of gun used.
A 5-mile stretch of Interstate 270 along Columbus' southern edge is now heavily patrolled, and police have received roughly 500 telephone tips to its hot line. The shootings began in May.
Police have said more of the shootings could be connected.
Police say the shootings were probably committed by people who are familiar with the area, which is surrounded by woods and popular with hunters. Deer hunting season is under way.
A string of deadly shootings around Washington last year terrorized residents. A jury last week recommended that convicted sniper John Muhammad be sentenced to death for one of the 10 fatal shootings.
