Oil Spill

Man there was a huge oil spill I think off the coast of Spain. They said it was bigger than the one that happened in Alaska. What do they do to clean it up? My brother said that they should just set the oil on fire. It would get rid of it faster than cleaning it up.

Considering how long it would take for the fire to go out and how much more damage it would cause, setting the oil on fire is not a good option. Cleanups usually try to restore and help the environment, not destroy it more. They use all sorts of techniques to clean up oil, techniques that are as non-envasive as possible. I am sure there are websites with more info. I remember even hearing that pantyhose with hair in it was used to clean up oil in water.

It was off the coast off Spain and the WWF estimates that if all the oil spills out it will be twice as big as the Exxon Valdez Spill in Alaska in 1989. Officials don't know if oil is leaking from the bow or not or even how much. So it could very well end up being bigger than the 89 oil spill.

I really hope that it isn't as big or as horrible as the Alaska oil spill. I hope that the officials can keep it contained and not let it destroy tons of wildlife.

Just my two cents worth of opinions and other facts.

did you say they are not even sure if it is spilling? hope they do their best on this, the nature doesnt really need this.

Kind of makes you wonder about all the environmental disasters that occurred during World War II everytime a ship sank. what happened to all that oil?

The ship did break in half, spilling about 1 million gallons of heavy fuel oil. The two halves sank, taking about 19 million gallons down with them. The hope is that the oil would sink and harden in waters more than two miles deep before it could inflict disaster on the rich fishing grounds.

What I have read they towed what was left out to sea and let it sink about 2 miles deep. and the talk of the temps that far down keeping it in more of a wax type state are maybes. what happens when the hull corrodes over the years and the 18 or 19 million gallons comes up.seems to me that they didn't want it in their backyard so they towed it out and let it sink. by the time it does become a problem the people that made these decisions will be long gone.
I'm no expert on how to handle it, but it seems to be not at all right to just dump it.
I don't see the fish dumping their crap in our backyards.
